Westport News: Boom! Power Out! Road Closed

At 12:56 PM today, Westport Firefighters responded to a reported explosion and smoke in the area of Elaine Rd. and Compo Rd. South. Arriving units found an Eversource power line (that ran along the Metro North right of way near the tracks) down and arcing. The energized line had caused the brush and some railroad ties along the side of the track to catch on fire. Firefighters called for train traffic on Track 3 to be stopped and called for a slowdown on Tracks 1, 2 and 4 for the duration of the incident. Metro North and Eversource personnel responded to the incident to assist Westport Police and Fire units on the scene. The power line was de-energized before firefighters could apply water to the fire and extinguish it.

Westport Police shut down Compo Rd. South during the time of the incident.  Tracks 1, 2 and 4 were reopened shortly thereafter but Track 3 remained closed. The last Westport Fire Department unit left the scene at 1:35 PM.

Westport Fire Officials would like to remind everyone that we are in a “High Fire Danger Alert” which means that conditions are very favorable for brush fires. Please be careful with discarding smoking materials and anything capable of producing a spark or open flame, especially when near brush or other materials that could easily ignite.

Connecticut State Troopers Urge Caution with Fireworks

Middletown, CT. (June 29, 2016): As the July 4 th holiday weekend quickly approaches, the Connecticut State Police reminds Connecticut residents that fireworks are illegal in the State of Connecticut. Over the past few weeks the public has been overwhelmed with advertisements, signs, and sales pitches of so-called “fireworks.” July 4 th always raises questions about what is legal as far as fireworks are concerned. To avoid confusion, and to caution our citizens, Connecticut Law (29-357) says:

Only sparklers and fountains, which are non-explosive and non-aerial, are legal in Connecticut. Sparklers and fountains can only be legally purchased and used by persons age 16 or Novelty items such as party poppers, snakes, smoke devices and anything that emits a flame are not legal for private use in Connecticut. In addition to being illegal, exploding devices are dangerous and have caused serious injuries in the past. A number of house fires and grass fires have also been attributed to Illegal fireworks can bring with them not only the potential for property damage, but could cause injury or fatality to human life. If a fire or explosion caused by legal or illegal fireworks causes injuries or damage, the person responsible could be charged with a criminal offense.

The safest way to enjoy a fireworks display is to attend a public display conducted at a state approved site by Connecticut licensed pyrotechnicians.  Also, while enjoying the holiday weekend keep safety in mind around backyard bon fires and fire pits. Before starting a bon fire or fire pit check town regulations, store water nearby, supervise children around open fire, and don’t throw garbage into the fire. Aerosol cans and other types of garbage can potentially explode and become dangerous projectiles.

Vacation In…. Fairfield!

The Office of Community and Economic Development announced that as part of a renewed emphasis on tourism, the Town of Fairfield unveiled today a new website designed to provide visitors and residents alike with information on upcoming events, local attractions, things to do and places to stay, eat and shop in Fairfield. The new mobile-responsive website, www.ExperienceFairfieldCT.org complements a new Fairfield Town Map and Guide, which is presently being distributed at more than 280 locations in the New York metro area throughout the busy summer tourist season.

“Fairfield is the quintessential New England town with a rich, 375-year history, picturesque coastline and a vibrant and walkable downtown. There’s so much to see and do, all within minutes of each other, making Fairfield a great place to visit, relax and unwind,” said Mark Barnhart, Director of Community and Economic Development.

The website also provides added visibility to local restaurants and retailers, helping to support the Fairfield small business community. Fairfield-based restaurants or merchants selling goods at retail may request a complimentary listing, which includes business name, address, phone number and hyperlink to a website as well as a thumbnail image. “We know that all businesses are continually looking for ways to reach their consumers, yet we recognize that many of our small businesses lack the resources to adequately do so. This website will help, creating a platform to connect visitors with local businesses,” observed Mr. Barnhart. The website allows users to filter content based on a specific neighborhood and/or the type of accommodation, business or cuisine being sought.

The Town partnered with the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce and its hospitality and tourism partners on this initiative. The Town’s Economic Development Department formed an arts and tourism working group this past year and the group has been meeting regularly to discuss ways in which to co-promote the Town and each other’s venues. “We were very excited to be part of this new venture,” stated Beverly Balaz, President of the Fairfield Chamber of Commerce. “We are always looking for opportunities to work with the Town to promote our wonderful community and our many small businesses,” she added.

Michael A. Jehle, Executive Director of the Fairfield Museum and History Center, agreed, stating, “The Fairfield Museum is delighted to partner with the Town on this important tourism initiative that will help promote our extraordinary business and non-profit community to new visitors.” Joe Rog, Director of Development for the Fairfield Theatre Company (FTC), added, “Fairfield is an exceptional destination for arts and entertainment and this website will be a great resource for people interested in visiting the area. We are excited to be a part of it.”

The Town enlisted the help of a Fairfield-based marketing firm, Six7Marketing, to develop the new website. “Six7 did an outstanding job, and was extremely responsive to our needs,” commented Mr. Barnhart. “We gave them an overall design concept, and they were able to execute that plan and help us realize our vision in a very short period of time,” he added.
