Massive fire hits Bridgeport
Video Report–#Bridgeport CT–Right around 2am firefighters received a call for a fire at 340 Putnam Street. Police on patrol reported heavy smoke on East Main Street. Firefighters arrived finding the fire on Brooks Street in the rear of the structure. The fire quickly consumed the six family home before spreading with the aid of a northerly breeze to fuel the fire. Within ten minutes the first evacuation tone for firefighters to evacuate the house of the first fire was called. By now the fire had spread to the adjoining house. Once again the evacuation tone sounded for firefighters to evacuate the second home. United Illuminating was urgently called to the scene because primary electrical lines had fallen onto ladder six. It was almost an hour before the firetruck was freed and could rejoin in the attack of the fire. By now a third house had been the victim to the heat by the nearby flames.
Everyone in all the buildings were able to get out of the homes because of working smoke detectors. The Bridgeport Fire Department actively works on smoke detector awareness throughout the city during the day and it appears their hard work has paid off once again.
From what we have been able to gather from initial radio report was that one tenant was taken to the hospital for second degree burns. Four people were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.
Initial reports to the Red Cross said that 75-100 people may have been displaced because of this fire.
