#Fairfield’s Clean Energy Task Force announced that a solar workshop will take place on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 from 7:00 pm to 8:30 pm at Osborn Hill Elementary School, 760 Stillson Road, Fairfield.

The Task Force, in conjunction with SmartPower, has been hosting free solarize workshops where residents can learn how they can save money and energy while reducing their environmental impact with a solar installation on their homes.

Scott Thompson, Chair of the Fairfield Clean Energy Task Force, said, “Solarize Fairfield, a partnership between the Fairfield Clean Energy Task Force and SmartPower, is a coordinated effort across the community. Through a competitive selection process, SmartPower has selected All Green it Solar as Fairfield’s solar installer.”

All Green it Solar will give a presentation on May 17th about the Solarize program, including how to finance a solar installation. There are now $0 down solar loans that allow residents to go solar and secure the financial benefits of the federal tax credit and state rebates without a large upfront investment.

Since Solarize Fairfield officially launched on March 23, 2016, more than 160 Fairfield homeowners have expressed interest in “going solar,” and nine homeowners have signed contracts for new solar installations generating, in total, nearly 100 kW of clean, renewable electrical power.

In recent years, across Fairfield, nearly 300 homeowners have installed solar power systems. According to Ron Blumenfeld, a long-time Fairfield solar homeowner, “At first my motivation for going solar was to protect the environment. But as it turns out, solar has real economic benefits as well. Our electric bill dropped from $200 a month to essentially zero, except for an administrative cost to United Illuminating (UI)—$17 a month. The installation of 32 panels went smoothly and quickly—it was non-disruptive. It took only about two and a half days from the time the first electrician arrived to when the solar installers finished. The installers were skilled, efficient and cleaned up completely. When they put the panels up they walked on them—they’re that tough. They’re built to handle 120-mile-per-hour winds. And the panels come with a 25-year warrantee, so you feel very protected.”

Mr. Blumenfeld continued, “I decided to buy it outright rather than lease. The economics of solar now are such that it’s basically a no-brainer. I can’t think of a single drawback to our solar panels. I haven’t had any problems with the system. There are no moving parts. It’s silent and reliable.”

Homeowners need to sign a contract by July 28, 2016 to be eligible for the Solarize Fairfield pricing.
