Fairfield News: Hazmat Incident

Fairfield Fire Department Press Release: At 5:07PM PM the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a call from a resident at 200 Edgewood Road reporting her refrigerator was leaking in the basement. Ladder 2 and Engine 3 responded to assist the resident. Upon arrival the resident stated that when she opened the freezer her eyes were irritated and began to water. Ladder 2 made entry to the basement with full protective equipment and a compliment of meters to assess the situation. Upon entering the basement Ladder 2’s meters immediately went into alarm signifying the release of the vintage model refrigerator’s coolant. Ladder 2 closed the refrigerator and secured the scene until addition units arrived. Engine 3 arrived on scene and established command. Car 3 and Engine 2 were requested for additional resources and personnel. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) was contacted and responded to the scene. Additional assets were called from the Fairfield County Hazmat team. It was determined that due to the age of the refrigerator and the coolant that may be present that a “Level A” HazMat Entry would be conducted as a precaution. HazMat teams made two entries into the dwelling to stop the coolant leak. After containing the source of the leak Fire units used positive pressure ventilation to vent the structure and continued to meter the residence to ensure it was safe for the residents to re-enter. American Medical Response was called to the scene to evaluate the resident and for a medical stand during entry operations. There were no reported injuries. Last fire unit left the scene at approximately 10:12PM.

5:12pm–#Fairfield CT– Firefighters were called to 20 Edgewood Road.  The homeowner said there was a liquid coming out of the refrigerator.   Firefighters are concerned not just about the loss of refrigerant but a strange ammonia smell.  As of 7:40pm crews are still on scene and the road is blocked off.  The Fairfield County Hazmat Team is also on scene.

Bridgeport News: One Dead After Robbery/Pursuit/Rollover Accident

#Bridgeport News: On Thursday, I was the first to tell you at 5:50pm about a man on McKinley Avenue who returned home from work and was robbed at gunpoint in a dark blue Toyota SUV. What was taken included a gold chain, $18 in cash, and a bag of Skittles.

A short time later at around 6:10pm, police located a vehicle matching that description on Kossuth Street on the east side. Police attempted to pull the vehicle over a number of times. The vehicle, a Toyota 4 Runner, drove through side streets at a high rate of speed according to Bridgeport Police Chief AJ Perez. The car then entered Route 8/25 northbound. The Toyota 4 Runner that the suspect was in was reported stolen out of Southport. The owner of the vehicle admitted the car was left unlocked and that the key fob was left in the glove compartment.

The Toyota traveled on Route 8/25 past exit 5 and then turned towards the valley on Route 8 northbound at the split. The state police accident report said the vehicle veered left towards the median, over-corrected, then “yawed” to the left lane into the right lane, and the right shoulder of the roadway. While on the shoulder, the vehicle collided with a metal guardrail on the right shoulder where it went airborne, impacted two trees and overturned.

Eighteen-year-old Corbin Cooper of Trumbull Avenue, Bridgeport, was ejected from the front passenger seat. He was pronounced dead from his injuries. Back in April, Cooper was shot in the chest outside PT Barnum Housing. In a report filed by Frank Recchia of News12, the grandmother credited a passerby who took Cooper in their personal car to the hospital with saving her grandson’s life.

After the crash, one suspect fled the scene to Beardsley Park but was quickly apprehended by police. There were two people trapped inside the vehicle, and police had to protect the firefighters and EMS workers since the firearm used in the robbery was not accounted for at the time.

The state police accident report identified the driver as fifteen-year-old Louis Valentine of Bridgeport and passengers Luke Jones, 18, of Bridgeport, and Najee Hunter, 16, of Stratford. Valentine received minor injuries, while Jones and Hunter had more serious injuries.

The highway was shut down for a number of hours for the accident investigation.

Kristina-Newman Scott, State Historic Preservation Officer/Director of Culture, Arts and Historic Preservation informed Mr. Marpe of this designation (see attached). Mr. Henkels stated “The HDC appreciates and encourages the resident-initiated request to pursue this National Register designation for the Bridge Street neighborhood. We hope that this honorary designation will promote further awareness of the cultural value in preserving the type of historic resource this neighborhood represents to the residents and to all the citizens of Westport.” Mr. Marpe said, “On behalf of the Town of Westport, I want to thank the homeowners for their commitment to historic preservation and for being stewards of an outstanding collection of historic houses.” Those with questions concerning the Bridge Street National Register District designation may contact Carol Leahy, HDC Staff Administrator, at 203.341.1184 in Room 108 at Town Hall. About the National Register of Historic Places The National Register of Historic Places is the official list of historic properties recognized by the Federal Government as worthy of preservation for their significance in American history, architecture, archaeology, engineering and culture. A study report for the Bridge Street Historic District, which preceded the National Register listing, was prepared for the Historic District Commission by The Public Archaeology Laboratory, Inc., historic preservation consultants, from Pawtucket Rhode Island and was fully financed by federal funds through a Historic Preservation Enhancement Grant awarded to the town by the State Historic Preservation Office. Listing in the National Register results in consideration in planning for a federal, federally licensed, or a federally assisted project, eligibility for federal tax provisions including tax credits for the rehabilitation of historic commercial, industrial, and rental residential buildings, and qualifications for federal grants for historic preservation when funds are available.
