$100 Million Donation to Connecticut Public Schools

Bridgeport, CT – Mayor Joe Ganim joined Governor Lamont, First Lady Annie Lamont, leaders in the General Assembly, and students at a public event in East Hartford for the announcement of two major donors who are providing gifts of $100 million dollars to public schools in Connecticut. This gift of $100 million dollars donated by Ray and Barbara Dalio of Dalio Philanthropies will be matched by $100 million from the State of Connecticut and will seek to raise another $100 million from other philanthropists and business leaders. Mayor Ganim attended this event, as Bridgeport will be one of Connecticut’s urban municipalities that will benefit from this educational funding gift for Bridgeport Public Schools.

“This major funding donation and financial match by our state is much needed for the youth in our cities and recognizes that our students can and will thrive, and will provide valuable outcomes for the future in our community. A partnership with donors from the business community, government and educational leaders will surely result in positive opportunities and results for our youth,” stated Ganim. “We look forward to seeing that positive energy in the students of Bridgeport.”

9:40pm–#Monroe CT– Firefighters activated the hazmat crews for an industrial fire at 1480 Monroe Turnpike which is Anodic Inc. The Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Eversource has been called to the scene. The town has been receiving mutual aid from surrounding towns for fire and EMS assistance and town coverage.

3 Suicides In 3 Days

#Trumbull CT–The body of a Trumbull resident was discovered in a wooded area of the Pequonnock River Trail on Wednesday afternoon suffering from apparent self-inflicted injuries. The resident, a fifty-six-year-old male resident of the Old Town Rd. area of Trumbull was discovered laying on the ground, off of the path, with apparent fatal injuries. The Trumbull Police were sent to the Park St. entrance of the Pequonnock River Trail around 2:30 PM for the report of the male’s discovery. Trumbull EMS also arrived and assisted with rendering medical aid to the male before transporting him to Bridgeport Hospital where he later died from his injuries. Current police investigation shows this to be an isolated incident with no threat to the safety of the public. The victim’s identity is being withheld pending family notification.

Earlier today, a man jumped from the Sikorsky Bridge. Unconfirmed reports say he died. On Wednesday a Fairfield man hung himself on Burroughs Road. he also died.

UPDATE: State police confirmed the man jumped off the bridge, leaving his car with hazard lights flashing on the bridge. His body was recovered by Sikorsky Fire Department’s fire boat and personnel.

Fairfield News: Serious Crash Shuts Down Black Rock Turnpike

Fairfield Fire Assistant Chief George Gomola said that firefighter had to extricate 2 from the car and one from the overturned pickup truck. All three were transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries. To ensure that no victims were thrown from the vehicles firefighters worked with police and used thermal imaging cameras to check down the embankments.

While this represents a 9 percent decrease in distracted driving fatalities from 2016 to 2017, there is clearly more work to be done. “People know texting and driving is dangerous and illegal, but many do it anyway, putting others at risk,” said Joseph Giulietti, Commissioner, Connecticut Department of Transportation.

“Beginning April 2, you will see increased law enforcement efforts as officers will be stopping and ticketing anyone who is caught texting and driving.” Since 2015, nearly 30,000 crashes in Connecticut have involved a distraction – resulting in 41 fatal crashes. “Limiting distractions while driving is a simple way to prevent motor vehicle accidents,” said Captain David Farrell, Westport Police Department. “If you need to text, pull over in a safe location. If you text and drive, you will pay.” Violating Connecticut’s distracted-driving laws can be costly.
