BRIDGEPORT, CONN (August 21, 2021) – A Storm Emergency for Bridgeport as of 5:00 pm on Saturday, August 21, 2021 has been declared as the city prepares for the impact of Tropical Storm Henri.   Bridgeport residents are urged to “prepare for the worst” as predictions for Henri are anticipated to be one of the most severe storms to hit Connecticut in recent history.  

Bridgeport is expecting to see significant flooding in addition to down trees and wires that will lead to power outages.  High tide is around 11:40am on Sunday, August 22 during the peak of the storm; which is predicted to be approximately 8am until as late as 7pm.   Residents in low lying areas or along any water shore line are advised that their vehicles may be parked at municipal and school parking lots until 8am on Monday August 23rd.

“I’m asking all Bridgeport residents to prepare for the worst with this storm.  We know there is going to be flooding with high wind activity and so downed wires, tree branches along with power outages are expected.   At this point residents should take every precaution to do what they can this evening to mitigate damage and have a prep kit ready and to stay home, stay safe,” stated Mayor Ganim.   “Do not try to drive during the storm, and don’t park on an emergency roads as we need first responders and storm crews to have safe passage for emergencies and restoration services.”

  • Charge all electronic phones, tablets, and flashlights  
  • Move your vehicle to high ground, and away from trees if possible   
  • Remove valuable items from basements if you live near in an area prone to flooding
  • Clear debris from sewer grates or catch basins near your home 
  • DO NOT DRIVE DURING THE STORM

  • WPCA has been working for the past days to clear catch basins to allow water runoff through the sewer system as efficient as possible with the fast incoming rainfalls and expected flooding.
  • Police and Fire Departments are prepared to assist individuals in need of rescue from vehicles, homes, or water.
    • GBT available for assistance of BPD, BFD, EOC if needed tomorrow.
  • Emergency Operations Center is coordinating city departments and other critical agency partners.
  • Emergency Shelter is available for residents in need or that have to be evacuated from their homes.
    • Emergency Shelter available at Geraldine Johnson School as of 6am on Sunday, August 22nd.
    • Individuals in need of transportation to the emergency shelter may call 203-579-3829
  • Trash, Recycling, Brown Bag, and Transfer Station will be delayed for service until Tuesday.

MV Fatal Accident

#Shelton CT–On 08/20/2021 at approximately 7:00 PM, Shelton Police, Shelton Fire and EMS were
dispatched to the area of 137 Meadow St for an accident involving a vehicle and a
motorcycle. The preliminary investigation by police revealed that the driver of the
motorcycle was traveling on the Meadow St headed southbound towards Shelton Ave and
the driver of the vehicle was traveling on Meadow St headed northbound.
The operator of the motorcycle, 43 year old Robert Kimmer of Shelton, was transported
to the hospital and was later pronounced deceased. The operator of the vehicle, 34 year
old Andrew Zebendon of Shelton, did not claim any injuries.
The Shelton Police Traffic Division Reconstruction Team is currently investigating this
accident. No enforcement action has been taken at this time. Any witnesses or persons

Update of the Connecticut State Rail Plan

The Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) will conduct a series of virtual public information meetings to launch the 2021-2025 Connecticut State Rail Plan update. The kickoff meetings will provide the public and stakeholders an opportunity to learn about the purpose and requirements of the Connecticut State Rail Plan and how its updates were initiated.

The first meeting will begin on August 31, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. Additional meetings will be held on September 2, 2021, at 1:00 p.m., and September 9, 2021, at 6:00 p.m. All sessions will present the same information and will be live-streamed via Microsoft Teams Live Event and YouTube Live. Registration is not required. After a formal presentation, there will be a live question and answer (Q&A) session during which the public is invited to ask questions or provide comments. The Microsoft Teams Live Event offers closed captioning for multiple languages, and each meeting will be recorded and posted on the CTDOT Virtual Public Information Meeting library website.

In addition to the virtual public informational meetings, a “virtual room” will provide content about the 2021-2025 Connecticut State Rail Plan update and the opportunity to submit comments and questions.

Bridgeport News: Assault With A Dangerous Weapon

Scott Appleby, Office of Emergency Management said the person was assaulted with a baseball bat and the suspect fled the scene.

Bridgeport News: Firearm Recovery

#Bridgeport CT– On August 19, 2021 at approximately 1:07 pm the Bridgeport Police Tactical Narcotics Team (TNT) responded to the intersection of Arctic Street and Pembroke Street on a report of a person in that area with a firearm.  Upon officers arrival the suspect, later identified as 20-year-old Kevin Despres of Middletown Connecticut, observed the police vehicles and immediately began to run away from them unsolicited.

Officers engaged the suspect in foot pursuit and observed Despres grabbing at his waist band. Despres then pulled a handgun from his waistband.  As Despres was running away, he tripped and fell to the ground allowing the police officers to catch up to him and take him into custody without further incident.  A loaded .22 caliber pistol was recovered.

Despres does not possess a valid CT pistol permit and is currently on probation in Middletown, CT.  Despres was charged with Carrying a Pistol without a Permit and Interfering with a Police Officer.  Bond is set at $100,000.  He is schedule to appear in court on August 20, 2021.
