“KIDS’ DAY” AT THE STRATFORD FARMERS MARKET IS BACK!

STRATFORD, CT, August 8, 2024—The Town of Stratford will be hosting its ninth annual “Kids’ Day” at the Stratford Farmers Market on Monday, August 26th from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. at Paradise Green in Stratford, CT.

This family-friendly and fun-filled back-to-school event offers a wide range of healthy activities that are perfect for the entire family. The goal is to captivate young minds with the wonders of fresh, locally grown produce through a variety of engaging and interactive activities.

“Kids’ Day,” said Mayor Laura R. Hoydick, “is a perfect example of intergenerational efforts put on by the Town and its many partners. This opportunity for connection and education continues to bring great benefit to all ages in our community. I am looking forward to attending this year’s Kids’ Day and hope that you participate in this opportunity for community engagement across ages.”

Tom Dillon, the market’s manager, shared his enthusiasm: “We are thrilled to bring Kids’ Day back to the Stratford Farmers Market. It’s a wonderful opportunity for children and families to enjoy the market and learn about healthy eating and local produce.”

Greta Broneill, Assistant Director of Health, added, “Events like Kids’ Day are essential for promoting community health and wellness. We are excited to see families come together to learn about and enjoy healthy living.”

Activities will include gardening, yoga, Zumba lessons, health information, touch-a-truck with the Stratford Fire Department, story-time with the Stratford Library, giveaways, and much more!

Kids’ Day at the Stratford Farmers Market is part of a larger initiative to increase access to healthy, locally grown foods in partnership with Get Healthy CT Coalition. Get Healthy CT (GHCT), a coalition of businesses and community organizations, including Bridgeport Hospital, St. Vincent’s Medical Center, local health departments, and social service agencies, collaborates to prevent and reduce obesity in the greater Bridgeport and New Haven regions.

Stratford News: Joint Task Force Arrests Heroin Dealer, Seizes Drugs and Firearms

The Stratford Police Narcotics, Vice, and Intelligence Unit, in collaboration with the FBI Safe Street Task Force, conducted an investigation into Angel Nunez, identified as a mid-level narcotics dealer trafficking and selling significant amounts of heroin laced with fentanyl. On July 23, 2024, investigators, with the assistance of the FBI Safe Streets Task Force and Bridgeport Police Task Force, executed search warrants at a residence identified as Nunez’s stash apartment. They seized approximately 15.2 grams of raw heroin, packaging material, and items used to process heroin. Additionally, two firearms, an assortment of ammunition, and a tactical vest were found and confiscated.

As a previously convicted felon, Nunez is prohibited from possessing firearms. He was taken into custody at his residence and charged with multiple offenses, including criminal possession of ammunition (2 counts), criminal possession of a pistol/revolver (2 counts), illegal transfer of a pistol/revolver, possession with intent to sell a narcotic substance (subsequent offense), and operating a drug factory.

Mayor Laura R. Hoydick to Host Summer Reading Champion Reception for Stratford Youths

STRATFORD – As we move into the second half of summer, Mayor Laura R. Hoydick is preparing to recognize Stratford youths at the annual Summer Reading Champion reception on Wednesday, August 7, from 3:30 to 5:30 PM outside the historic Perry House, 1128 West Broad Street. Over 125 Stratford youths will be honored with a Mayor’s Reading Champion certificate of recognition at the Summer Reading Challenge celebration, where Champions will be treated to ice cream sundaes, goodie bags, and other surprises. This is a drop-in event; families are welcome to stop by any time between 3:30 to 5:30 PM. Pre-registration is required and can be found at https://www.stratfordct.gov/page/mayors-summer-reading-champion. Registration closes on July 31.

In the past, nearly 2,500 students have read over 22,500 books to complete the Mayor’s reading challenge. In the event of inclement weather, the celebration will be held indoors at the Baldwin Center.

STRATFORD LIBRARY TEEN EVENTS IN AUGUST

Camp Crafts: 11:00 am – 2:00 pm. Camp out in the teen space with friends this summer and try something new or share your skills and talents with others. Drop in during craft open hours to paint, create sand art, and more. Camp dates: 8/1, 8/5, and 8/8. No registration required; while supplies last. Grades 7-13. Location: Teen Department.

8/6: 6:00 – 7:30 pm. Teen Tuesday: Open Craft Hour: Make your own glass bead or message bracelets, try sharpie painted personalized plates, or create your own mini-art masterpiece with acrylics. Of course, there will be snacks and music because it is a Teen Tuesday! No registration required; for grades 7-13. Location: Lovell Room.

8/13: 3:00 – 7:00 pm. Teen Tuesday: Fandom Mini Con: Teens: Get ready to embrace your inner fandoms at our Fandom Mini Con! We’ll have Japanese snack taste testing; henna art by Jamilah; fandom trivia; a cosplay contest (come dressed as your best character!); geeky crafts; and to end the event, a Smash Bros. tourney! No registration required; for grades 7-13. Location: Lovell Room.

8/20: 7:45 – 9:30 pm. After Hours Nerf Party: Treasure seekers join the hunt! We’ve hidden gold in the stacks and it’s up to each team to work together to find the biggest hoard. Bring your own Nerf blaster or borrow one of ours. For safety: blasters cannot hold more than 6 darts at a time, cannot use “Nerf Rival Balls” and cannot be oversized. No latecomers admitted; registration required as well as a parental permission slip, which must be handed in to stay and play. For grades 7-13. Location: Lovell Room. NOTE: This event ends after hours. Make arrangements ahead of time to be picked up–on time–in the back parking lot.
