ANNUAL “BLUES ON THE BEACH” CELEBRATION SET FOR SAT. JULY 23rd
Stratford is set for the return of its annual “Blues on the Beach” summer music festival, which has become an increasingly popular summer ritual for the coastal town. The event will take place at Short Beach on Saturday, July 23rd, from 12:00 p.m. -9:00 p.m. Blues is part of the Stratford Celebrate Festivals and is run by volunteer Erin McLaughlin.
“Erin and her team always do a fantastic job of organizing the bands, stage, and vendors for this terrific event. I hope residents will come out and enjoy the sun and sand, amazing music, and some of the best views that Stratford has to offer,” said Mayor Laura R. Hoydick.
As with last year, Short Beach will close at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, July 22nd, the evening before the festival, to accommodate stage set-up for Saturday’s events. The Short Beach Golf Course will be closed the entire day on Saturday, July 23rd.
Residents attending “Blues on the Beach” are asked to note the following:
- Only Town Residents will be allowed to park at Short Beach. Stratford resident stickers are required to park at Short Beach.
- Beach access will be closed on Friday, July 22nd at 7:00 p.m., so preparations can be made.
- Parking for the public will begin at 9:30 a.m.
- Bicycles are allowed but must be walked in the park area per Stratford Police Department.
- Golf Cart parking is allowed in designated area.
- No dogs or pets are allowed at the beach.
- Cooking with charcoal is prohibited.
- A pickup and drop-off area for Ubers and children or family members has been designated at Wayne’s Walk at the intersection of Riverdale Drive and Lighthouse Ave.
- Trash from attendees must fit inside of the BigBelly compacting receptacles available on site. Bagged garbage should be placed in dumpsters and not be left beside receptacles.
This year the Stratford Arts Commission is sponsoring a Tent Decorating Competition, and those winners that creatively decorate their tent will receive an early parking pass for Blues on the Beach in 2023.

Stratford Police said: Shortly after 1 am on 07/09/2022 the Stratford Police responded to the Platinum Gentleman’s Club located on the Barnum Avenue Cutoff for a report of shots fired. Upon arrival one male victim was identified. The victim suffered a non-life- threatening gunshot wound to the thigh. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The assault occurred in the parking lot of the
business.
The investigation is active and ongoing at this time and more information will be release at a later date.
2022-07-09@1:04am–#Stratford CT– Police and EMS were called to the 800 block of Barnum Avenue Extension for a report of a person shot. St. Vincent’s Hospital reported two came to their emergency department with non-life-threatening injuries. It has NOT been confirmed if these two calls are connected at this time.

MAYOR HOYDICK ANNOUNCES KEY POLICE PROMOTIONS
STRATFORD – Mayor Laura R. Hoydick and Police Chief Joseph McNeil have announced three promotions from within the ranks of the Stratford Police Department; Lieutenant Anthony Rhew is promoted to the rank of Captain, Sergeant James Lazaro is promoted to the rank of Lieutenant, and Officer David Sheehan is promoted to the rank of Sergeant.
“We are pleased to announce these promotions today, as these officers have distinguished themselves in the performance of their duties to the citizens of the Town of Stratford, and among the finest in the ranks among our excellent professional police force,” said Mayor Hoydick. “I know that Captain Rhew, Lieutenant Lazaro and Sergeant Sheehan will continue to the performances that have earned them these promotions, and will continue to be a credit to Stratford.”
“These officers have performed notably in their previous posts, and we are proud to promote them this afternoon and give them their new assignments,” said Chief McNeil. “These officers have embodied our ideals of service and dedication, and I look forward to seeing them rise to the challenges of their new roles in the service and protection of the citizens of Stratford.”
Captain Rhew has been with the Stratford Police Department for 17 years and previously worked for the Milford Police Department. He is a graduate of UCONN and was previously assigned as the Lieutenant in charge of the Training Division.
Lieutenant Lazaro has served with the Stratford Police Department for 20 years. He is a graduate of Seton Hall and Columbia University and was last assigned as a Sergeant with the Patrol Division.
Sergeant Sheehan has been with the Stratford Police Department for 7 years. He is a veteran of the United States Marine Corps and served with the Waterbury Police Department for 20 years. He was last assigned to the Patrol Division as a police K-9 handler.
The promotions took effect July 4th, with Town Clerk Susan Pawluk swearing them in to their new posts this afternoon in the Council Chambers at Stratford Town Hall.

STRATFORD MAYOR APPOINTS JAMES BUCK DEPUTY FIRE CHIEF
STRATFORD – Mayor Laura R. Hoydick announced today that James Buck has been named the new Deputy Fire Chief for the Town of Stratford. Buck comes to the Town of Stratford from the City of Bridgeport where he currently serves as Deputy Fire Chief, a post he has held since 2019. Buck will replace Jermaine Atkinson who has been promoted the Fire Chief following the announced retirement of Chief Brian Lampart.
Buck holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Public Safety Administration, and an Associate’s Degree in Emergency Management with a concentration in Fire Science. He joined the Bridgeport Fire Department in 1994 as a Firefighter, rising through the ranks to Fire Lieutenant, Safety Officer, and Fire Captain, before becoming Deputy Chief. He has also served as the Emergency Management Director for the Town of North Branford since 2015.
As an administrator from a neighboring municipality, Buck brings significant familiarity and knowledge of infrastructure and operations of the Stratford Fire Department, especially related to mutual aid response.
“James Buck has had a distinguished career in the City of Bridgeport, and brings a tremendous skill set and base of experience to our Department here in Stratford,” said Mayor Hoydick. “I am confident that Deputy Chief Buck, joining with our new Chief Jermaine Atkinson, will add tremendously to the leadership team that manages our dedicated professional firefighters. We welcome him to Stratford!”
“I’m excited to welcome Deputy Chief Buck to the Stratford Fire Department,” said Atkinson. “He is a well-respected member of the Fire service community, with a high level of motivation for success. I’m looking forward to the future of the Stratford Fire Department moving in a positive direction as we serve the citizens of Stratford.”
