Operation Hope Needs Our Help!

Operation Hope needs our help! More and more of our neighbors are turning to the Fairfield-based organization for help feeding their families, and with the holiday season upon us, the need is greater than ever.

That’s why state Senator-elect Tony Hwang, state representatives-elect Laura Devlin and Cristin Vahey, along with Representative Brenda Kupchick are proud to join Operation Hope and First Church Congregational in hosting a community food drive. It will take place on Saturday, Dec. 20, from noon to 4 p.m. During those hours, donations may be dropped off in the parking lot of First Church Congregational, 148 Beach Road, Fairfield. All donations will go directly to Operation Hope’s Food Pantry.

“Since the founding of Operation Hope in 1986, the citizens of Fairfield have demonstrated time and again their generous and compassionate spirit in helping people in need,” said Rev. David Spollett, Pastor, First Church Congregational. “Unfortunately, more of our neighbors struggle to provide food for their families than ever before. The Food Pantry at Operation Hope is literally a lifeline for those in need.”

Consider these two facts from Operation Hope:

 Last year Operation Hope provided 159,000 meals to people in need.

 Last year in Connecticut 33,000 people were homeless – nearly half of those were children.

“We are so grateful this community recognizes that some of our neighbors are struggling to get by and that they can do something to help,” said Carla Miklos, Executive Director of Operation Hope. “Donations of food, toiletries and other basic items make a huge difference for someone experiencing hard times. We appreciate the delegation sponsoring this event and hope people will stop by during their busy Saturday and drop off an item or two.”

Reps Concerned About Unemployment Taxes

HARTFORD – State Rep. Gail Lavielle (R-143) today expressed serious concerns about an increase in unemployment taxes that Connecticut employers will have to pay starting in 2015. The additional tax is designed to help the state pay off the more than $1 billion it borrowed from the federal government in 2009 to keep its unemployment compensation trust fund solvent. Connecticut is the only state where employers will have to pay this tax. As a result, Connecticut’s employers will have the highest federal unemployment tax rate in the country.

“Although employers will see the increase in their federal tax bills, the state is responsible for it,” said Lavielle. “The other seven states with loans outstanding for more than five years all applied for, and obtained, waivers from the federal government. The CT Department of Labor (DOL) chose not to apply in order to help the state pay the loan off more quickly. It’s unfortunate that the DOL did not consult with or inform the legislature or the business community before making the decision. It’s even more disturbing that it did not inform employers of the change before they heard about it elsewhere. “This puts significant stress on employers,” Lavielle continued, “because businesses operating on the calendar year have already completed their budget planning for 2015 and won’t have taken the change into account. It also sends a loud and clear message to employers that doing business in Connecticut is not predictable and that making it easier and less costly for businesses to operate here is not high on the state government’s priority list. Surely it’s possible to do better.”

The state’s Unemployment Trust Fund, which makes required benefits payments to unemployed Connecticut workers, became insolvent in October 2009. Continue reading Reps Concerned About Unemployment Taxes
