Shots fired during robbery officers injured
(Bridgeport, CT – April 18, 2013) – Three people were in custody in connection with a commercial burglary on Main Street in the City’s North End Thursday. The initial alarm for 4173 Main St. was received at 3:15 a.m. The first officer arrived on scene at 3:18 a.m.
When police first arrived, officers observed a white Cadillac in the alleyway. Also, the alarm company had contacted the owner of the AT&T store and reported an activation. The owner had remote access to view from his home feeds to the store security cameras and he relayed, through 911 operators, valuable real-time accounts of what was transpiring.
Police later determined that the burglars gained access to the AT&T store through the adjacent Seven Star Chinese restaurant, which did not have a security alarm. The burglars used a sledge hammer to breach a cinderblock wall into the phone store and had taken cash and a number of phones when police encountered them.
The two officers confronted the suspects. One of the officers fired several shots after observing what he believed to be a gun in one of the suspect’s hands.Nobody was hit. The suspects then used the sledgehammer to smash the window of the restaurant and fled. A large number of police officers converged on the area and over the next hour three suspects were arrested.
Police seized the Cadillac, which was believed to be the getaway car. Two officers were injured. One officer was cut by broken glass and had injured ribs. A second officer was treated for an injured ankle. The Detective Bureau responded to investigate.
According to Capt. James Viadero, there have been several, similar commercial burglaries in the city in recent months and detectives are trying to determine if there is any link.
