Protecting Yourself From Wild Animals (the four legged type)

Fairfield–After a report of five dogs being killed by coyotes in town we thought it import to rerun the video Lt. Perez of the Fairfield Police Department did last year.  According to Fairfield’s Animal Control’s website:

Steps that can be taken to reduce coyotes as being a threat around your home include feeding and keeping pets indoors, supervising pets when they are taken outdoors, removing brush-cover that coyotes and other wild animals can take cover in, disposing of trash appropriately, and taking other sources of food or prey into consideration that may be in your yard. Keeping your pet up-to-date on its rabies vaccinations is also an important task that can protect both you and your pet in the event of a wild animal confrontation.

In the event that your pet is attacked by a coyote, do not attempt to break-up the incident with your bare hands, as this is the perfect chance for you to get bitten by both animals. Loud noises like yelling, banging on a metal pan or beeping the horn on your vehicle may scare away the coyote. Use a hand-held portable air horn, which can be purchased at many outdoor or marine sporting goods stores.

If your pet comes into contact with a coyote or other animal, do not handle your pet without using latex gloves. Saliva could remain on your pet’s body. Contain your pet in a room of your house or your garage, away from you and members of your family and call Fairfield Animal Control at (203) 254-4857 or the Fairfield Police Department at (203) 254-4800 and contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Revised Flood Insurance Rate Maps For The Shoreline Area of Fairfield

The map panels for Fairfield are 418, 419, 436, 437, 438, 556 and 557.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is proposing revised Flood Insurance
Rate Maps for the shoreline area of Fairfield. The maps are due to become effective in May of
2013. The impact of these new maps may include additions or modifications of special flood
hazard areas, changes in base flood elevations or depths, and flood zone designation changes.

FEMA has published notice of the proposed flood hazard determinations on June 8, 2012 in
the Connecticut Post. The significance of the publication is to start a 90-day appeal period,
beginning June 8, 2012. Any owner or lessee of real property who believes his or her property
rights will be adversely affected by the proposed flood hazard determinations may file an appeal.
The sole basis for an appeal is the possession of knowledge or information indicating that the
proposed flood hazard determinations are scientifically or technically incorrect. All appeals
must be forwarded by the Town to FEMA during the 90-day appeal period. Anyone with
questions regarding the new mapping or appeals can contact Assistant Planning Director Jim
Wendt at (203) 256-3050 or jwendt@town.fairfield.ct.us.

The new proposed maps are available for review in the Town Plan and Zoning Office, Sullivan
