Around 4am New Years Day Bridgeport Police responded to a shooting at 1323 Howard Avenue. It is very early in the investigation but the video appears to show the victim was shot on the porch and police were looking for shell casings in the Getty Gas Station next door. It is unknown of the victim’s status. We will update as soon as we receive them.

9:37pm–#Bridgeport–Report of a the front porch at 354 Seaview Avenue was on fire and now out. Fire department to investigate.

7:17pm–Bridgeport–Firefighters responded to a laundromat at 2462 Fairfield Ave. Upon arrival

they reported smoke on the roof. Upon further investigation they found no smoke or fire. The air mass we are experiencing tonight is heavy so any type of smoke is taking longer to to rise and sometimes hovers. We experience this a little over a month ago, firefighters from multiple towns were chasing false alarms.

9:00am–#Bridgeport- #ctfire– Mattress fire at 1391 Main Street (near Washington Ave) knocked down quickly by fire department.

What appeared to be a falling satellite during the Insight Bowl turned out to be the floating camera which has become common in sports for the last decade.  Lining up for a play near the 20-yard line at  of Sun Devil Stadiu in Arizona Friday.   Two Hawkeyes had to jump out of the way when the camera fell when the wire appeared to snap. SkyCam out of Tulsa OK provided the camera for ESPN.  No one was injured.

It’s one thing to have five three-point shots in a game. It’s special when two of them are buzzer beaters, but it’s a whole other thing when you break a tie with one on a game winning buzzer beater. That’s exactly what Fairfield Warde’s Mike Wright did in Fridays 52-49 victory over the Notre Dame Lancers on Friday night. “I feel amazing right,” Wright said moments after his game winning shot.

The Mustangs came into the Fairfield holiday tournament hosted by prep as the team with the worst record at 1-2. In the first round of the tournament on Wednesday, in a game where no one thought it was possible for them to win, the Mustangs defied all odds and upset the unbeaten and No. 9 team in the state Fairfield Prep with a 68-76 upset win in overtime.

In Friday’s championship, again as the underdog, Warde pulled off another thrilling upset–winning the tournament for the very first time.

“I absolutely love it,” Warde coach Ryan Swaller said of taking home the trophy. “This is for all the guys who have built this program up over the seven years from coach Walter Fitzgerald (passed away after the 2010 season from Brain Cancer) to now.”

The Warde defense stayed strong against the Lancers throughout the game holding them to only 12 points the first three periods and 13 in the fourth period. More importantly, the Mustangs offense from around the perimeter was spot on all night—Warde as a team sank nine three-point shots and Wright owned five of them with 79 points in the game.

“Wow, I didn’t even know I had that many,” Wright said he was told his stats. “I thought I only had three.”

The Lancers, still looking for their own first Fairfield holiday tournament win, didn’t make it easy for Warde. Arkel Miles, the Lancers big senior, led his team with 19 points and was followed by Dan Upchurch who had 11. However, they were the only two Lancers to reach double digit scoring as second half shooting woes plagued them.

“You’re being kind to say that,” Lancer coach Vin Laczkoski said after one reporter asked whether or not his team had poor shot selection in the second half. “We’re going to rebound from this though.”

Notre Dame will look to get back on track next week when they travel to Danbury to play Immaculate at 7 p.m. Fairfield Warde on the other hand can now look forward to going back to FCIAC competition.

“I think we might be scouted a little more,” Swaller said. “Beating these two teams gives us a lot more confidence in going against other FCIAC teams.”

Warde will test their new found confidence in an away game against Bridgeport Harding on Tuesday, 7 p.m.

Police received a 911 call around 1:15 a.m. about a confrontation on the New Haven Green involving a group of young men and the Occupiers. Witnesses said the men walked through the Occupy encampment and began kicking the tents and yelling “wake up”.   Read full article….

As we reported as the story was breaking on December 29, 2011 at 5:58 PM, the Fairfield Fire Department was dispatched to a report of an outside chemical spill at General Electric Headquarters located at 3135 Easton Turnpike. A worker observed a large amount of fluid coming from one of the buildings and reported the problem to GE security. In accordance with local and state protocols, GE activated their emergency response plan and notified the Fairfield Fire Department and Connecticut DEEP of the spill.

Upon arrival, the first fire units were notified that approximately 500 gallons of diluted heat transfer fluid from the buildings utilities had accidentally leaked from a broken pipe and entered the storm drainage system. The liquid traveled through exterior drains to outside areas on the property. The product, called DOWFROST, is NOT considered a Hazardous Chemical according to OSHA standard 1910.1200 and is “practically non toxic to aquatic organisms” per the DOW Chemical Company’s material safety data sheet. Fire personnel quickly worked to minimize the spread of the spill by constructing dams to contain the product and minimize environmental exposure. Cleanup contractors were called to the site by GE with vacuum trucks as a precaution to remove the product for proper disposal. Fairfield Engines 2, 3, 5, HAZMAT support trailer 1 the department’s shift commander responded to the scene. A Connecticut DEEP officer was also on site.

Assistant Chief Scott Bisson stated, “Due to the non-hazardous nature of the materials involved, this situation was ultimately a good test of GE’s and the Fairfield Fire Department’s hazardous materials response partnership.” Bisson further stated, “The product was contained on GE’s property and GE’s neighbors were not at risk during the incident.”

There were no injuries of employees or fire personnel as a result of the incident. Normal business operations at the facility should not be impacted by the cleanup and there were no evacuations required. The last fire unit cleared the scene at 7:42 PM.

Approximately 3:10am firefighters received a call of a structure fire at 26/28 Clinton Avenue possibly with trapped children, unknown floor. By 3:15 first units arrived and found heavy fire in the rear and that the building and it was occupied on the first floor. Initial searches found no one trapped and primary searches confirmed this. The fire was confined to the third story in the rear of the building. The video does show heavy smoke and water damage throughout the building. By 3:26am the bulk of the fire had been knocked down and firefighters continued working fire extensions into the building. Three fire lines were used in the attack. Around 4am command reported there were 4 adults and 6 children left homeless from this fire. The occupants took care of their own living arrangements and that the Red Cross was not needed.

MANCHESTER, N.H. — Authorities said a 74-year-old man smoking while on oxygen died in a fire in Manchester on Tuesday…..The Manchester Fire Department and State Fire Marshal’s Office said Saxton was smoking while on home oxygen system when a small explosion occurred.  Read full report with video….
