Car vandals hit Bridgeport streets
Fairfield Fire Truck Hit By Car
At approximate 3:00 PM on March 5, 2012, Fairfield Firefighters were dispatched to a report of a vehicle accident with injuries on Black Rock Turnpike near Stillson Road. Fairfield Engine 2, Ladder 2 and the shift commander responded to the scene along with Fairfield Police and AMR. Emergency personnel found a 3 car accident with a the driver of one car unconscious and unresponsive locked in his running vehicle. Emergency personnel forced entry into the vehicle, stabilized the vehicle and initiated medical care on the driver . As emergency personnel were extricating the victim from the car, a second accident occurred where a vehicle struck a car and a Fairfield Fire Department Ladder Truck that was protecting the scene of the initial accident. No fire personnel were on the ladder truck at the time of the accident and no fire, police or EMS responders were injured. An additional ambulance was called to the scene as a precaution and ultimately all parties from the second accident refused treatment and transport to the hospital. The victim of the first accident was treated and transported to an undetermined hospital by AMR in stable condition. No other injuries were reported as a result of the first accident. No additional units were called to the scene as a result of the accident and personnel were able to provide seamless care to all parties on scene.
Assistant Chief Scott Bisson stated, “We are often asked why the fire department sends so many apparatus to the scenes of vehicle accidents and I beleive the answer is self evident, it is for the tools, personnel and safety of all emergency personnel operating in the road ways.” Bisson further stated, “Barrier tape and flashing lights may warn drivers of an accident in the middle of a busy roadway but only 60,000 pounds of steel can stop or deflect a moving car from striking emergency personnel when drivers ignore those warnings. The system worked today and prevented any additional injuries to emergency responders”
The cause of both accidents remain under investigation by the Fairfield Police Department. The Fire Department’s ladder truck was out of service for approximately 2 hours while the fire department maintenance division assessed the damage and made temporary repairs to restore it to emergency service.

Fire Displaces 3 On Wallace Court In Bridgeport
Shortly after 12:30pm early Sunday morning firefighters received a report of a fire on Wallace Court in Bridgeport. Firefighters were already in the area when the call came in and were on scene within a minute. The narrow street with limited access created a challenge in getting equipment to the fire coupled with hazardous conditions when the power line burned off the building and into the road and began sparking. The fire extended into the attic causing delays in fully extinguishing the blaze. Its possible a space heater on the first floor may have been the cause; The fire marshal was called to the scene and has begun his investigation. No firefighters were injured but two adults and one child were displaced from the fire.
Heart Transplant Recipient Meets Donor Family
A heart transplant patient from New York and the family of the little girl who provided his donor heart will met for the first time at Webster Bank Arena on Saturday, March 3 during the Monster Truck Jam.
Approximately one year ago, a city resident’s and his two children were involved in a serious auto accident. Sadly, his 5-year-old daughter died from her injuries. The young girl’s heart was donated to a young boy in need. The son who survived the car accident and the young boy who received the heart are both big fans of monster trucks. Thanks to Howard Saffan, President of Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment, LLC, the families will be able to enjoy Monster Jam in the comfort of one of the arena’s executive suites.
Interview With Grave Digger Driver Randy Brown
I had a chance to talk with driver Randy Brown about the 30 year history of the truck Grave Digger Monster Truck. Randy told us the owner Dennis Anderson started out as a mud bogger using a 1957 Ford Pickup body. The truck was put together with what ever parts Dennis could find, competitors would kid him about that. He told them “I’ll take this old junk and dig you a grave with it” and that is how they came up with the name Grave Digger came about. A themed paint job has made it a fan favorite. The Monster Trucks will be performing at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport all weekend. This is a fun event for the whole family. I brought my son when he was 6, again at 16 with his 89 year old grandfather. We all had a blast! Bring earplugs! For more information isit the Webster Bank Arena by clicking here.
