Darien Arts Center Karate Tournament

A karate/marital arts competition took place in Darien Saturday, March 4th at the Darien Arts Center. “This is the first competition where the people running the tournament aren’t making a dime” Said Jerry Simon of the Fairfield Villari Self Defense Center. All the proceeds went to the Darien Arts Center. Bonnie Gombos of the Darien Art Center said “the kids are excited, they practiced harder, they are here to have fun but all this month we have been practicing for them to do their best in this tournament. It helps build their self esteem , some kids are really shy and they get up there and they do their best and that is what we are looking for”. The age of the participants ranged from children to adult. All participants received a participation award. Those that placed in the competition are listed below:

Fire Displaces 3 On Wallace Court In Bridgeport

Fire leaves 3 homeless

Shortly after 12:30pm early Sunday morning firefighters received a report of a fire on Wallace Court in Bridgeport. Firefighters were already in the area when the call came in and were on scene within a minute. The narrow street with limited access created a challenge in getting equipment to the fire coupled with hazardous conditions when the power line burned off the building and into the road and began sparking. The fire extended into the attic causing delays in fully extinguishing the blaze. Its possible a space heater on the first floor may have been the cause; The fire marshal was called to the scene and has begun his investigation. No firefighters were injured but two adults and one child were displaced from the fire.

Heart Transplant Recipient Meets Donor Family

A heart transplant patient from New York and the family of the little girl who provided his donor heart will met for the first time at Webster Bank Arena on Saturday, March 3 during the Monster Truck Jam.

Approximately one year ago, a city resident’s and his two children were involved in a serious auto accident. Sadly, his 5-year-old daughter died from her injuries. The young girl’s heart was donated to a young boy in need. The son who survived the car accident and the young boy who received the heart are both big fans of monster trucks. Thanks to Howard Saffan, President of Harbor Yard Sports and Entertainment, LLC, the families will be able to enjoy Monster Jam in the comfort of one of the arena’s executive suites.

Interview With Grave Digger Driver Randy Brown

Monster Trucks at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport All Weekend!

I had a chance to talk with driver Randy Brown about the 30 year history of the truck Grave Digger Monster Truck. Randy told us the owner Dennis Anderson started out as a mud bogger using a 1957 Ford Pickup body. The truck was put together with what ever parts Dennis could find, competitors would kid him about that. He told them “I’ll take this old junk and dig you a grave with it” and that is how they came up with the name Grave Digger came about. A themed paint job has made it a fan favorite. The Monster Trucks will be performing at the Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport all weekend. This is a fun event for the whole family. I brought my son when he was 6, again at 16 with his 89 year old grandfather. We all had a blast! Bring earplugs! For more information isit the Webster Bank Arena by clicking here.
