Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo Welcomes Six Piglets

BRIDGEPORT, Connecticut – May 15, 2015 –Hampton J. Pig and Olivia have done it again – welcoming a litter of six again this year – the sixth year in a row these lovers have produced piglets. Hampton and Olivia are both eight years old Guinea Hogs. The six piglets, as well as their parents, are currently on exhibit at the Zoo through the summer season. Visitors are invited to come to the Zoo to meet the rambunctious new additions to the Zoo’s family.

“All of the piglets are doing well and spend their days eating, sleeping and playing with their siblings,” reported Zoo Director Gregg Dancho.

The piglets range in weight from just under one pound to two pounds. When fully grown, Guinea Hogs may reach 100 to 300 pounds. They also are known as Pineywoods Guinea, Acorn eater, Guinea Forest hog, and Yard pig. According to the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy (ALBC), the hogs were once the most numerous pig breed found on farms in the Southeast but today there are fewer than 200. Guinea hogs are classified as critical, versus endangered, by ALBC and are unique to the United States.

The Zoo exhibits the Guinea Hogs in the New England Farmyard. The Zoo’s one male and two female Guinea Hogs came from Sedgwick County Zoo in Wichita and Virginia Zoo respectively.

Fire Destroys 3 Family Bridgeport Home

6:40pm–#Bridgeport CT–Firefighters were called to a 3 family house fire at 1775 Noble Avenue.  3 people passing by stopped and knocked on doors getting everyone out to safety.  I tried to interview them but they were just too humble, the great spirit and character I mentioned in an earlier editorial which makes Bridgeport great.    Witnesses tell me the fire started in the 2nd floor back porch and spread to the rest of the apartment building.  Firefighters had the upper hand of the fire in less than an hour and spend the next couple of hours chasing hot spots and overhauling the fire.  There were no reported injuries.  The fire marshal has been called to the scene to investigate the cause of the blaze.

Imaginary Lovers……

Passage of Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congressman Jim Himes (CT-4) voted in favor of HR 1191 the Iran Nuclear Agreement Review Act of 2015. The bill, which passed both the Senate and the House with strong, bipartisan support, requires that President Obama submit to Congress any deal with Iran on curbing its nuclear weapons programs. Congress will then have 30 days to express approval or disapproval of the agreement.

“I am pleased that the administration and our negotiators are so close to reaching a final deal to prevent the worst case scenario of a nuclear Iran,” said Himes. “This bill does not undermine the work that they have done. It simply requires that Congress have a chance to weigh in on the entirety of the agreement, which I think is our proper role as representatives of the American people. This bill adds to the transparency and the openness of the process, something that benefits everyone.”

The framework of the current deal on Iran’s nuclear programs involves a sharp reduction in centrifuges and uranium-enrichment facilities, as well as increased transparency for international inspectors.  In exchange, the international community will agree to lift some of the sanctions that are currently imposed on Iran.

“While I’m going to withhold my judgment on the final deal until the President submits it,” Himes continued, “I strongly believe that this is the right path for us to follow.  There are those in Congress who think war is the only option to stop Iran from becoming a nuclear power, but I, and the people in my district, have already seen too much American blood spilled in the Middle East. It is our duty to do everything possible to support a peaceful resolution before we ever consider putting the lives of more young Americans at risk, spending money we don’t have, and risking destabilizing the region even further.”
