Malloy Not Running For Third Term

Today, Governor Dannel Malloy announced he will not seek a third term.  How do you think history will remember him?  How will you remember him?

I began my first run for Governor on February 3, 2004, more than 13 years ago.  And now, a little past the midway point in my second term, I’ve obviously had to consider what the future might look like for myself and my family, for the Democratic Party, and for our great state.

I’ve thought a great deal about the areas my administration has tried to prioritize these past six years.  Throughout our work, we’ve tried to play the long-game for Connecticut, not doing what is politically expedient, but rather what we believe is in the best interests of the people we serve today, and for generations still to come.Governor Malloy Won't Seek Third Term

New Fisher House In West Haven Veterans Hospital

A new Fisher House in West Haven is being built to assist those who have a family member in the VA hospital. Ground was broken on this 16 suite house on April 11, and will provide free housing for an estimated 500 families a year. The house will be located on the VA campus on Campbell Avenue. As told by the Fisher House Foundation President David Coker, “This house will serve as a tangible symbol of our support…we believe it’s our duty to help provide an environment where families can focus solely on the healing process.”

The mind behind Fisher House, Pauline Trost, pursued her interest of being able to give temporary housing for families that was affordable, and was able to open up the first two Fisher Houses by 1991. The first VA Fisher House opened up in 1994 in Albany, NY, the same year David Coker joined as Fisher House’s Executive Director. The Fisher House Foundation has had a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for 12 years in a row, the highest amount of stars that a charity can receive. In addition, the Foundation has an A+ rating from Charity Watch, and has been awarded the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence.
Some of the dignitaries that were at the event include Connecticut VA Director Gerald Culliton, Senator Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Congressman Jim Himes, and State Senator Tony Hwang. “I think we have one of the best VA [hospitals] in the country, and now it’s been refortified with the opportunity to provide caregiver support,” Senator Hwang stated. To date, there are now 71 Fisher Houses across America, with Houses also placed in Germany and the United Kingdom.

Bridgeport News: Truck Self Starts Hits Parking Garage

10:03am–#Bridgeport CT– A letter carrier had a special delivery when her Ford pick up truck self stared on Fairfield Avenue near Water Street.  A police officer working a road detail heard the truck knock over the metal fence at the post office, and saw the truck hit the Holiday Inn parking garage and the tires continue spinning.  He ran over and saw no one was in the truck nor were there any keys in the ignition.  The woman came running over and opened the door and got the truck to turn off.  Fortunately there were no pedestrians or vehicles in its path.

Bridgeport Senators Bet On Casinos

BRIDGEPORT – Senator Marilyn Moore (D-Bridgeport) and Senator Ed Gomes (D- Bridgeport) released the following statement regarding the current proposal for a casino in East Windsor:

“I am in favor of the plan by Mohegan and Mashantucket Pequot tribes partners to build a casino in East Windsor. This will protect gaming revenue paid to our state and keep casino jobs here in Connecticut when the Springfield casino opens next year.” Senator Marilyn Moore said. “This plan will continue to benefit the state and our city in many ways. Revenues from the current casinos brought $6.2 million to Bridgeport in 2016 and are estimated to generate funds for our city for years to come.”

“The plan to open a third casino in East Windsor could save some of the nearly 6,000 jobs predicted to be lost in our state with the opening of a Springfield casino. This is about protecting good-paying jobs in Connecticut,” Senator Ed Gomes said. “While I have supported building a casino in Bridgeport in the past, I don’t think MGM’s offer is our best option right now.”
