New Ladder Truck For Fairfield Fire

Fairfield Fire Department is unveiling a new fire truck  at Station 2 on Jennings Road. The new truck, a 2017 Spartan/Marion, to be exact, comes with the “latest and greatest” features, says Lieutenant Kevin Polcer. The new Engine 2 contains numerous safety features, such as “full frontal airbags…and side protection”, which comes with most modern vehicles. The new engine also has “anti-lock breaks on all four wheels”. The new engine comes equipped with all LED lighting, a 1,500-gallon water tank, and a 75-gallon foam tank in order to make “foam on the fly”.  The Marion is also eco-friendly, taking diesel exhaust fluid, or D.E.F., so “the emissions from this truck are a lot less than a truck 10 years ago”. The body of the new truck is constructed with stainless steel to help with corrosion prevention to lengthen the life span of the engine. Also with the new truck comes new Motorola mobile radios and iPads, which are used along with their dispatch system.  The iPads give them a map with address numbers and hydrant locations throughout the town of Fairfield. This engine was ushered in to replace an “aging engine that had many miles on it, and needed to be replaced”. So, sleep easy tonight, knowing that your home is safe from the flames that may harm it.

Averting Cuts To Human Service Programs State Wide

#Bridgeport CT–Today  State Senator Tony Hwang, The CT Community Nonprofit Alliance (The Alliance) & The Kennedy Center and held a press conference in the Gallery of the Maggie Daly Arts Cooperative (MDAC), 1042 Broad Street, Bridgeport, to talk about how the state can avert devastating cuts to human service programs and save $1.3 billion over the next five years.

The majority of Connecticut’s human service programs are provided by nonprofit, community-based agencies like the Kennedy Center, that contract with the state. The State also provides some services for individuals with developmental disabilities and mental health and substance abuse treatment at significantly higher costs.

The Alliance is Connecticut’s statewide association of community nonprofits, which serve over 500,000 people each year and employ almost 14% of Connecticut’s workforce.

For details regarding the cuts to the Kennedy Center see: https://kennedyctrorg.presencehost.net/updates/  . The Alliance represents more than 500 nonprofit organizations across all categories, from Health and Human Service programs to Arts and Culture.  For more information on their mission and goals see: http://ctnonprofitalliance.org/about-us/

Malloy Not Running For Third Term

Today, Governor Dannel Malloy announced he will not seek a third term.  How do you think history will remember him?  How will you remember him?

I began my first run for Governor on February 3, 2004, more than 13 years ago.  And now, a little past the midway point in my second term, I’ve obviously had to consider what the future might look like for myself and my family, for the Democratic Party, and for our great state.

I’ve thought a great deal about the areas my administration has tried to prioritize these past six years.  Throughout our work, we’ve tried to play the long-game for Connecticut, not doing what is politically expedient, but rather what we believe is in the best interests of the people we serve today, and for generations still to come.

I’ve thought about how our state has Continue reading Malloy Not Running For Third Term

New Fisher House In West Haven Veterans Hospital

A new Fisher House in West Haven is being built to assist those who have a family member in the VA hospital. Ground was broken on this 16 suite house on April 11, and will provide free housing for an estimated 500 families a year. The house will be located on the VA campus on Campbell Avenue. As told by the Fisher House Foundation President David Coker, “This house will serve as a tangible symbol of our support…we believe it’s our duty to help provide an environment where families can focus solely on the healing process.”

The mind behind Fisher House, Pauline Trost, pursued her interest of being able to give temporary housing for families that was affordable, and was able to open up the first two Fisher Houses by 1991. The first VA Fisher House opened up in 1994 in Albany, NY, the same year David Coker joined as Fisher House’s Executive Director. To see a tour of a Fisher House in Richmond, VA,  see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1dSu3tBizg

The Fisher House Foundation has had a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator for 12 years in a row, the highest amount of stars that a charity can receive. In addition, the Foundation has an A+ rating from Charity Watch, and has been awarded the Independent Charities Seal of Excellence.
Some of the dignitaries that were at the event include Connecticut VA Director Gerald Culliton, Senator Richard Blumenthal, U.S. Congressman Jim Himes, and State Senator Tony Hwang. “I think we have one of the best VA [hospitals] in the country, and now it’s been refortified with the opportunity to provide caregiver support,” Senator Hwang stated. To date, there are now 71 Fisher Houses across America, with Houses also placed in Germany and the United Kingdom.
