Multi-generational Walk and Talk is Back in May.

The Stratford Health Department, The Baldwin Center, Stratford Parents’ Place and Stratford YMCA are excited to announce their Spring Walk N’ Talk series. We are inviting grandparents, parents, caregivers, and providers to join in for this enriching multigenerational experience. Lace up your sneakers, bring your loved ones, and join us as we walk and engage in health-related conversations.

The Walk N’ Talk sessions will kick off with a 30-minute talking session led by a health professional, allowing participants to ask questions and engage in discussions on important health topics. Themes for each week include “Healthy Beginnings for All Ages,” “Pediatric Health and Family Wellness,” “Mental Wellness Matters,” and “Healthy Habits, Happy Families.”

“We believe in the power of community and the importance of promoting holistic wellness,” stated Health Educator Walter Owusu. “By fostering multigenerational collaboration and providing valuable health information.”

Opera & Poetry Highlighted at Stratford Library April 21

The Stratford Library will host a special opera and poetry event in conjunction with “National Poetry Month” and featuring Italian poet and opera singer Stefano Russo on Sunday, April 21 at 2 pm. The program is free and open to the public.

Stefano Russo is an Italian American artist born in Rome, Italy who moved to the United States in 2011.
His artistic history began with opera singing and led to a passion for writing, especially poetry. He published his
first collection of poems, “Life, a Labyrinth of Thoughts,” in 2017 and another collection entitled “Beyond the
Chains of the Mind,” in 2017. In 2024 he wrote a memoir, “Prisoner”, and currently is working on another
collection of poems. The passion that drives him to write and sing is a passion that Russo has always cultivated to
make his nature shine and to give life to his identity. At the Library program, Russo will perform various opera
selections, accompanied by acclaimed pianist Eric Trudell, and discuss and read from his latest collection of
poems.

Stefano Russo poetry and poetry will be held in the Stratford Library Lovell Room starting at 2 pm on April

  1. Autographed copies of Russo’s book will be available for purchase after the performance.

Norwalk News: Vape ShopSearch Warrant and Arrest


#Norwalk CT–On Thursday, April 11, 2024, the Norwalk Police Special Services Division, in collaboration with the State of Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection (Drug Control Division), executed a Search and Seizure warrant at Smoke House 1 vape shop, situated at #108 Connecticut Avenue. This action is part of an ongoing investigation into non-licensed smoke/vape shops selling marijuana within the City of Norwalk. Smoke House 1 lacks the required license from the State of Connecticut to sell cannabis products exceeding the legal limit.

During the operation, the following items were seized:

  • Over 7lbs of marijuana
  • Several hundred products containing THC above the legal limit
  • Approximately $1200 in US currency

Two individuals were arrested as a result of the raid:

  1. Nusrat Shaika, 20 years old, residing at 1730 Mahan Avenue, Bronx, NY 10461, faces charges including possession with intent to sell 1kg or more of cannabis, possession of cannabis greater than 1 kilo, possession of drug paraphernalia, conspiracy to commit possession with intent to sell 1kg or more of cannabis, conspiracy to commit possession greater than 1kg of cannabis, and conspiracy to commit use of drug paraphernalia. Shaika’s bond is set at $50,000, and their court appearance is scheduled for April 26, 2024, in Stamford.
  2. MD Shohidul Joy, 19 years old, residing at 8945 217th Street, Queens, NY 11427, is charged with similar offenses to Shaika’s, including possession with intent to sell 1kg or more of cannabis, possession of cannabis greater than 1 kilo, possession of drug paraphernalia, conspiracy to commit possession with intent to sell 1kg or more of cannabis, conspiracy to commit possession greater than 1kg of cannabis, and conspiracy to commit use of drug paraphernalia. Joy’s bond is also set at $50,000, and their court appearance is scheduled for April 26, 2024, in Stamford.

GOVERNOR LAMONT APPLAUDS PRESIDENT BIDEN’S APPROVAL OF NEW FEDERAL RULE EXPANDING BACKGROUND CHECKS ON GUN SALES

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont is applauding an announcement made today by the White House that the Biden-Harris administration has approved a new federal rule implementing a key provision of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 that clarifies who must register as a federally licensed firearms dealer and requires anyone who sells firearms to conduct criminal and mental health background checks on potential buyers, regardless of how a sale is conducted.

The requirement addresses a loophole in federal rules that up until now did not require background checks for firearms that are sold online and at gun shows. Connecticut already requires universal background checks for gun sales, however many states do not. By implementing this new federal rule, these background checks will be required in all 50 states.

“Universal criminal and mental health background checks on firearm sales is an issue that has near-unanimous support of Americans, however for too many decades Congress has neglected the will of the people and refused to enact this commonsense requirement,” Governor Lamont said. “When it comes to firearms and efforts to prevent gun violence, a patchwork of different laws in different states does not work. As called for in the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act of 2022 as authored by Senator Chris Murphy, this rule is a coherent national policy that closes a gap in our federal background check system and is supported by the overwhelming majority of Americans. I applaud the Biden-Harris administration for taking this step and for their commitment to keeping our neighborhoods safe from gun violence.”

The Stratford Police Department Narcotics, Vice & Intelligence Unit, with assistance from the Drug Enforcement Administration Bridgeport HIDTA conducted a narcotics sales investigation within the Town of Stratford into Edward C Johnson. 

Based on this investigation, Search and Seizure Warrants were secured for the residence and Johnson’s vehicle. 

At the time of the Search Warrant execution, Johnson engaged Investigators in a foot pursuit, attempting to discard packaged narcotics from his person. Johnson was taken into custody. 

Upon warrant execution, Investigators seized over 2 pounds of Methamphetamine in both powder and tablet form, Oxycodone tablets, 6.5 pounds of Marijuana and $32,151.00 in illegal narcotics sales proceeds. 

On 3/22/2024, Johnson plead guilty in United States Federal Court for the Distribution of Methamphetamine and Distribution of Oxycodone. Johnson was sentenced to 7 years in Federal Prison, followed by 4 years of Federal Supervised Release.
