Scam Warning

Lottery/sweepstakes scam warning from Sergeant Jillian Cabana, Westport Police Detective Bureau

Lottery/Sweepstakes scams– Lottery/sweepstakes scams commonly involve emails or
phone calls to victims advising them that they have won the lottery or a sweepstakes.
The caller or mailer tells the victim that they will receive their prize money only after
first paying the taxes and processing fees up front. The suspects request payment for the
taxes by either a wire transfer or via Green Dot card (or similar prepaid credit card). The
suspect will instruct the “winner” to either wire money into a specific account or to go
and purchase a Green Dot card in a specific denomination and then provide them with the
PIN number off of the card. The caller may even say that the sweepstakes officials are
in town to deliver the winning sweepstakes check. Reverse look-ups on the area codes
of the callers have shown out-of-country area codes or cell phone providers. Many times
the locations the processing/tax money has been sent have been out-of-country addresses.
Tell the caller you are not interested and hang up.

Scam Warning

Bargain home/vehicle repair offers scam warning from Sergeant Jillian Cabana, Westport Police Detective Bureau

Bargain home/vehicle repair offers– In these scams the suspect will approach an elderly
resident at their home or in a parking lot and quote them a bargain amount for a service
such as dent pulling, chimney sweeping, or driveway paving that may otherwise be
expensive. After partially completing the service, the suspects may request additional
money from the victim to complete the work. Many times these cons use shoddy
materials and unskilled workers and may end up causing more damage than they were
supposed to repair. To protect themselves, consumers should make sure the company
is registered with the State of Connecticut’s Department of Consumer Protection.
Anyone offering home improvement services should hold a valid Home Improvement
Contractor’s license. Legitimate reliable businesses will not mind if you check them
out first. Use the State of Connecticut eLicensing website to check if a business holds a
current home improvement contractor’s license at https://www.elicense.ct.gov/Lookup/

Woman Charged with Risk of Injury

#Bridgeport, CT – Nov. 20, 2013 – A 22-year-old woman was arrested on child endangerment charges in connection with the physical abuse of her 5-year-old son by his father.

Jarelis Lugo, of Sylvan Avenue, was charged with risk of injury to a minor. Her bond was set at $50,000.

The arrest stemmed from an investigation in which the father, Daquon Gomillion, 22, was charged with multiple counts of first-degree assault and risk of injury to a minor in connection with physical assaults of their son.

He remains jailed on $750,000 bond.

Lugo was arrested by warrant today and charged with risk of injury.

When initially questioned by police, she stated that her son’s significant injuries, which were in various degrees of healing, were accidental. She stated that the injuries occurred when he fell in a pool, repeatedly fell off his bike and she stated in general that the boy “falls a lot.”

She subsequently acknowledged that the injuries resulted from ongoing physical assaults by the child’s father. She was aware of the abuse but did not report it.

Detective Dave De Feo investigated the case. Detectives Bobby Martin and Eric King served the warrant this morning.

Debra Greenwood, the CEO of the Center for Woman and Families in Bridgeport, said parents – or anyone in the community — who see any form of child abuse have an obligation to report it.

“We need to be the ones to protect children,” she said. “Children don’t have the ability to pick up the phone and tell someone.”

The center operate a 24-hour hotline: 203-384-9559.

PINE CREEK DREDGING PROJECT BEING PEFORMED

PINE CREEK DREDGING PROJECT BEING PEFORMED

First Selectman Mike Tetreau announced today that the Town has received a Certificate of Permission from the State of Connecticut to begin dredging Pine Creek. The project will be performed by Coastline Consultants, a contractor which is located in Madison Connecticut. The contractor should begin the project before the end of November with some preparation work possibly beginning the week of November 25, 2013. Actual dredging will occur about a week or two after initial preparation work begins. The dredging will occur for about four to six weeks depending on weather and favorable tides.

The dredging project is being performed to remove sand that accumulated in Pine Creek during Storm Sandy.   The Creek will be dredged approximately two feet from the mouth of the creek to an area of current “sand bars”, which is approximately 1200 feet.  The dredge rig includes a 30’ x 40’ barge and a CAT 312 excavator with ¾ cubic yard bucket.

Prior to dredging in the area, the contractor will let the Town and property owners know if vessels or temporary structures have to be moved for access to dredge. There will be a section of the Fairfield Beach Road turnaround located adjacent to 2182 Fairfield Beach Roadthat may be narrowed for transport of removed sand.  About half of the turnaround could be closed or narrowed.

For questions or to view the plans and permit, the public can contact or visit the Town’s Engineering Department at 725 Old Post Road or call 203-256-3015. Updated information will be placed on the Town’s website, www.fairfieldct.org.
