Reverse 911 for Bridgeport residents

(Bridgeport, CT – Sept. 13, 2013) – Residents of Bridgeport now can register online for the City’s Reverse 911 system, making it easier for them to receive important information during emergencies.

“The system is an important resource in communicating with residents, particularly during emergency situations,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “We had a hurricane and an epic blizzard in the last 12 months, and it is so essential for people to get timely, accurate information.”

The online form now will make it easier for people to register.

Residents can register at http://www.bridgeportct.gov/rev911

According to Mayor Finch, the Reverse 911 form adds new features that will help the City assist its vulnerable populations during large weather events.

During the hurricane and blizzard, the Emergency Operations Center received calls from residents looking for assistance with medical needs. For example, oxygen condensers have a back-up battery but not enough to make it through an extended power outage. Dialysis patients received help making urgent appointments.

There now is a section in the Reverse 911 form where residents can list medical needs. That information will help Emergency Operation officials coordinate efforts to assist people during emergencies, said Scott Appleby, the City’s director of Emergency Management and Homeland Security.

As always, the City will continue to utilize its website, social media and work with news organizations and radio stations to get out key information to our communities.

REVERSE 911 can be used for many situations to include:

·        Emergency evacuations

·        Missing person alerts

·        Natural disaster alerts

·        Hazardous material leaks

·        Crime alerts and prevention information

·        Neighborhood emergency situations

·        Sexual predator notifications

·        Homeland security alerts

Massive fire hits Bridgeport

Video Report–#Bridgeport CT–Right around 2am firefighters received a call for a fire at 340 Putnam Street.  Police on patrol reported heavy smoke on East Main Street.  Firefighters arrived finding the fire on Brooks Street in the rear of the structure.  The fire quickly consumed the six family home before spreading with the aid of a northerly breeze to fuel the fire.  Within ten minutes the first evacuation tone for firefighters to evacuate the house of the first fire was called.  By now the fire had spread to the adjoining house.  Once again the evacuation tone sounded for firefighters to evacuate the second home.  United Illuminating was urgently called to the scene because primary electrical lines had fallen onto ladder six.  It was almost an hour before the firetruck was freed and could rejoin in the attack of the fire.  By now a third house had been the victim  to the heat by the  nearby flames.

Everyone in all the buildings were able to get out of the homes because of working smoke detectors.  The Bridgeport Fire Department actively works on smoke detector awareness throughout the city during the day and it appears their hard work has paid off once again.

From what we have been able to gather from initial radio report was that one tenant was taken to the hospital for second degree burns.  Four people were transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

Initial reports to the Red Cross said that 75-100 people may have been displaced because of this fire.

Bridgeport Road Closures

BRIDGEPORT, CT (September 12, 2013) – Route 127 – East Main Street, between I-95 at Ann Street and Route 130 – Stratford Avenue will be closed to traffic for approximately 12 days from Monday, Sept. 16 through Sept. 27.  Motorists will use Kossuth Street and Waterview Avenue to access points north of the closure including the I-95 southbound ramp.

The Steelpoint Infrastructure Improvements Project consists of the installation of new underground utilities, including electrical, water, gas, telecommunications, sanitary and storm sewers as well as widening of the roadways in order to support future development.   AT&T / R&D Construction will be performing underground utility work on lower East Main Street, (SR 127) from Stratford Avenue to Ann Street, a total of about 0.06 miles.

The detour is expected to begin on Monday, Sept. 16 and will run through Friday, Sept. 27. Motorists can expect a full, around-the-clock closure during that period. Signage will guide motorists through the detour route. Motorists should be aware that modifications or extensions to this schedule may become necessary due to weather delays or other unforeseen conditions. Drivers are advised to maintain a safe speed when driving in this vicinity.
