Stratford News: Man Stabbed In The Face
Senator Has Plan Other Than Tolls
Connecticut needs to improve our transportation system. A reliable and modern transportation system is a key to a healthy economy and job growth. But we do not need tolls or tax increases to make that happen.
CT Senate Republicans presented a plan that shows another way to invest in transportation and grow jobs in a way that’s sustainable and accountable to taxpayers – all without tolls.
The Fiscal Accountability & Sustainable Transportation Reform CT (FASTR CT) Plan recognizes that trust in government is a major issue for residents. This plan would restore what has been stolen from transportation over the last decade and not take any more from taxpayers.
FASTR CT
-
Solves our transportation problems (funding and Special Transportation Fund solvency)
-
No tolls
-
No tax increases
-
Cuts back on bonding
-
Creates jobs
-
Pays off long term liabilities
-
Leverages federal dollars, maximizing federal low interest TIFIA loans to potentially 0.8%
-
Prioritizes needed projects
-
Creates accountability and vetting of all DOT projects
-
Ensures communication with New York on rail projects
-
Restores money that was diverted from the STF over the last decade

Stratford News: White Oak Tree Donated
STRATFORD – As part of a statewide effort from the Connecticut Tree Protective Association (CTPA), a white oak has been donated to the Town of Stratford, and planted on the green in front of Town Hall this week. The planting is in honor of the 100th Anniversary of the passage of the state’s Arborist Law. The law requires licensure for practicing arborists in the state, putting Connecticut ahead of other states when it comes to tree care.
“I thank the CTPA for their gift to the Town of Stratford in commemoration of our state’s critical Arborist Law, and I am hopeful that this tree will grow strong and proud here out in front of our Town Hall building for residents to enjoy for many years to come,” said Mayor Laura R. Hoydick.
The Quercus Alba, known commonly as the American white oak, was adopted as the official Connecticut State Tree in 1947, owing to the historical significance of the Charter Oak, which was a white oak. Tradition states that in 1687 the Connecticut Royal Charter of 1662 was hidden in a hollow of the Charter Oak to prevent its seizure by the English governor-general – making it an early symbol of American independence.
The CTPA is an educational association dedicated to the care of Connecticut’s trees based in Wallingford, and organized in 1922. More information about them is available on their website, ctpa.org.
Congratulations on our sponsor branching out to Oxford (pun intended)

Stratford Author Book Signing
The Stratford Library continues the fall season of “Sunday Afternoon Talks”, its monthly series of informative and entertaining talks featuring prominent local guest speakers, on Sunday, November 3 at 2 pm with “Stories from Stratford: “Shag Carpet Toilet” & “St. Stan’s: Tales from the Penguin Academy”. Guest speaker is author Kenneth Lynch. “Sunday Afternoon Talks” is free and open to the public.
Humorist Kenneth Lynch wrote two novels about his experiences growing up in Stratford in the early 1970s: “Shag Carpet Toilet” and “St. Stan’s: Tales from the Penguin Academy”. Lynch was born in Bridgeport but soon moved to Stratford where he attended Franklin Elementary School, Holy Name of Jesus School, Wooster Junior High School and Stratford High School. In his senior year, his family moved to Wallingford and lived there until he enlisted in the Navy in 1976. Following a 27 year career, he settled down in Dublin, Pennsylvania, where he now lives. He never forgot the people and events of life along Connecticut’s “Gold Coast”, however, and claims tongue-in-cheek: “You can blame Stratford for the way he is!”
“Sunday Afternoon Talks” will be held in the Stratford Library’s Lovell Room beginning at 2 pm on Sunday, November 3. A complete schedule of future talks through May 2020 is now available at the Library or online at: www.stratfordlibrary.org.
