Westport First Selectman Jim Marpe announced today that Jennifer A. Fava has been appointed
the Parks & Recreation Director for the Town of Westport. Ms. Fava will assume her duties effective September 1, 2015. She replaces former Parks & Recreation Director Stuart McCarthy
who retired on June 1. Until recently, Ms. Fava served for three years as the Commissioner of Parks and Recreation in the Town of North Hempstead in New Hyde Park, N.Y. where she managed a work force of 385 full and part-time employees and oversaw an operating budget three times larger than Westport’s Parks & Recreation budget. She managed the maintenance, operations and improvements of 53 park facilities (approx. 900 acres) including golf courses, a marina, the Clark Botanical Garden, multiple aquatic facilities, an athletic stadium, and a 60,000 sq. ft. community center. She increased department revenues and program offerings and reorganized the department with a new management structure for greater efficiency and cost effectiveness. She also implemented a more user-friendly website with new on-line registration and facility reservation capability. Prior to that, for nine years, Ms. Fava served as the Superintendent of Parks & Recreation for the Town of Yorktown, N.Y. There she managed 29 parks, related facilities and personnel, and was responsible for approximately 750 acres of open space. She worked closely with the Yorktown Land Trust on the preservation, improvement and acquisition of open space and, in collaboration with the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference, developed 12 additional miles of trails within the Town’s nature preserves.
Ms. Fava is affiliated with numerous associations, boards and committees including the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and the New York State Recreation and Park Society (NYSRPS), and is Chair of the Mid Atlantic Regional Consortium Executive Board. She holds a B.S. Degree in Leisure Studies and Resources from UMass Amherst and an M.B.A. from Fordham University. Ms. Fava said, “I believe it is important to ensure a balance of active and passive recreation opportunities and to look at each site not only on an in dividual basis, but also as a part of the entire park system as a whole. Open space is critical not only for providing passive opportunities, but also for the aesthetics and environmental benefits of the community.”
#BRIDGEPORT CT– Today, former Bridgeport Mayor and 2015 mayoral candidate Joe Ganim unveiled a proposal to establish an Office of Public Integrity (OPI). The public’s interest in transparency and open
Prompted in part by the recent cover up of crime statistics by the current administration, and the continued refusal to disclose the reevaluation numbers and hidden tax increases for the following calendar year, Ganim made the announcement for the OPI.
Ganim says, “An Office of Public Integrity must be independent and nonpartisan. It should have jurisdiction to have oversight of all aspects of Bridgeport’s government operations, agencies, and authorities.”
The Office of Public Integrity will achieve cost savings for the people of Bridgeport both from uncovering wasteful spending and from reforming and proposing improvements to City of Bridgeport purchasing practices. The Office of Public Integrity will also bring about more transparency in government by ensuring documents about financial and other dealings are properly released.
Advising Ganim on the OPI is Ed Adams, former FBI agent who led the efforts against Ganim for public corruption. Adams is supporting Ganim in this effort, as well as his bid for Mayor.
“This is an important initiative to reassure transparency and integrity in the city of Bridgeport. I’m more than willing to help Joe in this effort, and in any capacity to help this city. Despite the past, I believe Joe Ganim is the right person to lead Bridgeport into the future,” stated Adams.
Ganim stated, “I believe this an important step to ensure transparency and integrity in city government.”
“If this Office of Public Integrity was already in place, the people of Bridgeport would already know what is happening with the secret tax reassessment process underway and learn more about why taxes in Bridgeport are so high.”
Ganim’s plan for this Office of Public Integrity include:
Assure the public’s interest is protected in an open, transparent and honest government;
Protect the rights of citizens and the press to have access to public documents;
Provides transparency in city processes to ensure compliance with municipal law and City ordinances;
Create a means to a fair and thorough investigation of corruption and address any complaints as they pertain to dishonest practices in City government operations;
Ganim concluded, “It is important for our city’s government to be transparent and earn the trust of their residents. This will be a giant step in the right direction for Bridgeport governmental operations.”
