The Bridgeport Fire Department was dispatched to the Don Raphael Restaurant at 256 Oak Street at approximately 4:30 am for a fire in a commercial building. Fire units arrived on scene to find smoke and fire visible from the building at which time an aggressive interior fire attack was conducted. This was placed under control at 5:19 am and no injuries were reported. The Fire Marshall’s office is investigating.
Norwalk News: Oyster Festival
The annual Norwalk Seaport Association Oyster Festival starts Friday September 6, 2024, and runs through Sunday September 8, 2024. Motorists should expect delays in lower East Norwalk as well as South Norwalk due to festival traffic.
Seaview Avenue will be closed from Fort Point Street to East Avenue during the festival operating hours. East Avenue between Seaview Avenue and Van Zant Street will be one-way for northbound traffic only from Friday at 4:00pm through Sunday at 9:00pm.

Threatening Roommate Arrested: Convicted Felon Found with Two Handguns
On August 31, 2024, at approximately 3:52 AM, dispatch received a call about a threatening incident involving a firearm at 175 Helen St. The suspect, later identified as Willie Tyron Johnson, was reported to be chasing his roommates down the street while making threats with a firearm. Officers were quickly provided with a description of Johnson and his direction of travel, leading to his swift arrest by patrol officers. An investigation began immediately to find additional evidence.
Johnson was subleasing a room at the address where the incident occurred. Since the firearm was not found on Johnson during his initial arrest, officers applied for a risk search warrant to locate it. The judge approved the warrant based on the facts and circumstances presented. During the search of Johnson’s bedroom, officers discovered two handguns: a SCCY CPX 9mm and a Colt .32 caliber. It is important to note that Johnson is a convicted felon and prohibited from possessing firearms.
Johnson was charged with several offenses, including criminal possession of a firearm (two counts), threatening with a firearm, risk of injury to a child, and breach of peace. His bond was set at $75,000.
Union Solidarity
Today the Bridgeport Teacher’s Union met at Fairfield Woods Middle School in Fairfield for a closed all-member union meeting. Jeff Morrissey is the president of the Bridgeport Education Association (BEA), the union that represents the teachers in Bridgeport Public Schools told us that the meeting will address recent changes and listening to member’s concerns.
I-95 Crash
The middle, left lane and left breakdown lane is closed on I-95 southbound is closed due to a multi-car crash. No word on injuries.

Bridgeport News: Donuts attract cops, leads to drug and firearm arrest
On September 1, 2024, at approximately 5:44 a.m., officers responded to an alarm call at Boca Oyster Bar, located at 10 East Main St. The alarm was determined to be false. As the officers were preparing to leave the scene, they noticed a Dodge Charger in the Bass Pro parking lot across the street performing “donuts” and spinning its tires, leaving fresh circular skid marks on the pavement.
The driver of the Dodge Charger was later identified as Luis G. Hartwell. After completing the reckless driving maneuvers, Hartwell parked his vehicle next to another car, which was occupied by a male spectator. Officers approached Hartwell as he exited his vehicle. As he attempted to return to his car and opened the driver’s side door, officers quickly detained him. While requesting Hartwell’s vehicle paperwork, one of the officers noticed a clear plastic bag containing a white powdery substance in his fanny pack, which later tested positive for cocaine during booking.
On further investigation, Hartwell was found to be in possession of a controlled substance. In addition to reckless driving, officers discovered that his vehicle had neither valid registration nor insurance. During a search of the vehicle, officers recovered a loaded Ruger Security 9mm handgun with a light and laser attachment near the driver’s seat. Hartwell, who is prohibited from owning or possessing firearms or ammunition, was also charged with carrying a pistol without a permit, illegal possession of a weapon in a motor vehicle, and the illegal transfer or purchase of a pistol or revolver.
Hartwell’s bond was set at $100,000.
The vigilant work of the patrol officers on the A shift led to the discovery of the reckless operation of the vehicle, as well as the seizure of another illegal firearm from the streets of Bridgeport. The arresting officer’s training and experience enabled the quick identification of narcotics, which further led to the recovery of the firearm.
Assaults
Unconfirmed radio reports say there was an assault at Park and Washington Avenue and another assault on Oak Street. It is not believed to be related.

Ansonia News: Armed Robbery at Laundromat; Four suspects sought
On August 31, 2024 at 7:12 P.M., the Ansonia Police Department investigated a robbery at the AC Washing Well, 133 North Main Street. An employee reported that four Hispanic males enter the business and a short time later one of the males approached, displayed a handgun and demanded money. The suspect took money from the register and another area of the business and all four males then fled the store leaving in a white Honda Civic. The suspects were described as follows; male 19 to 20 years old wearing black pants, hoodie, and sneakers wearing a black mask armed with a handgun, male 16 years old wearing black pants, hoodie and sneakers, male 16 years old wearing black pants, hoodie and sneakers with white lettering on the hoodie, and male 16 years old wearing black pants and hoodie, white shirt and sneakers with a white hat.
