Bridgeport, Conn. (May 5, 2015) – Today, Bridgeport Mayor Bill Finch and Fire Chief Brian Rooney announced that nearly 50,000 free smoke alarms have been installed in the Park City since the inception of its “Safe Asleep” program. They also unveiled a new phase of the program, including an advertising initiative, in order to grow that number this year.

 

“Thanks to the efforts of the Safe Asleep program and the hardworking men and women of the Bridgeport Fire Department, we’re keeping the kids and families of the Park City safe,” said Mayor Finch. “With nearly 50,000 smoke alarms installed in Bridgeport homes, we are a national leader in protecting kids and families from the dangers of fires. These new ads will help us reach even more homes, and keeping more families safe as Bridgeport gets better every day.”

 

Through a partnership with GBT, buses will provide mobile advertising for the program that has helped save hundreds of lives in Bridgeport. Since the program began, there have been 143 documented instances of fires in homes with smoke alarms installed for free by the Bridgeport Fire Department. In each of those incidents, residents of those homes were alerted by their smoke alarm and able to escape safely without injury.

 

“The Safe Asleep program saves lives,” said Chief Rooney. “Most residential fires happen at night. With a working smoke alarm, you have a chance to get out safely.”

 

In addition to new bus advertisements, Firefighters and representatives from the Safe Asleep program also visit Bridgeport schools to help educate kids on the importance of fire prevention and safety. The Fire Department has also partnered with Dominos Pizza and Fire Engine Pizza Co. offering free pizza to promote the free smoke alarm program.

 

The “Safe Asleep” program began in 2005 as a partnership between the city fire department and RYASAP. Residents in need of smoke alarms can call 203-335-8835, and the fire department will install it for free.

2:55pm–#Fairfield CT–Resident calls police of a man in a bandanna using a power tool to open a box in the resident’s home on South Street.  Police discover there are about 10-15 gas company employees working in the area.

Fairfield Firefighters responded to a report of vehicle accident with injury on I-95 NB between Exit 22 and Exit 23.  AMR Ambulance arrived first on scene and reported that extrication was required.  Fairfield Firefighters arrived on scene and initiated rescue efforts to free two trapped victims using the jaws of life and other rescue tools.  A third occupant who had been ejected on impact and was determined to be non-resuscitate-able by paramedics.   Firefighters from Engines 1 and 4, Ladders 1 and 2 worked together and extricated both victims in less than 10 minutes.  One victim was transported to St. Vincent’s MC, the other to Bridgeport Hosp.  Injuries were determined to be non-life threatening.   The driver of a second vehicle was transported to St. Vincent’s MC, also with non-life threatening  injuries.  Engine 1 remained on scene to assist with lighting and scene stability.  The cause of this accident is under investigation by the Conn. State Police.   I-95 is closed at this time between exit 22 and 23 NB to allow accident investigation.  According to Asst. Chief George Gomola, the incident commander “Our firefighters and the medics from AMR worked together to provide exceptional emergency medical care to the victims and to rapidly extricate them from a very heavily damaged vehicle.  The loss of life which occurred prior to our arrival is tragic, and our thoughts and prayers are extended to the victim and his family.”

 

3:50am—#cttraffic–#Fairfield CT–I-95 northbound between exit 22 and 23 is closed after a deadly crash. One person was ejected from a car after a three car crash that required firefighters to help the victims out of their cars. Unknown how many at this time have been transported to both Bridgeport Hospital and St. Vincent’s Hospital. Check traffic reports before your commute as this can affect it.

3:11am–#cttraffic–#Fairfield CT–I-95 northbound between exits 22 and 23 a three car crash with a possible death; one person ejected from the scene.  Firefighters on scene with a complicated extrication according to radio reports.

11:40pm=–#Bridgeport CT–Police on the way where a large crowd is gathering after  a woman was assaulted a “man” at Olive Street and Park Avenue.  The woman has been slashed in the face.    By standers holding the “man” at a nearby gas station.
