Bridgeport, Conn. (June 16, 2015) – Mayor Bill Finch, Bridgeport Superintendent of Schools Fran Rabinowitz, and the United Way launched a universal pre-K initiative today aimed at ensuring every kid in Bridgeport is prepared to enter kindergarten.
“I have four boys who all went through pre-K,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “Seeing is believing. You see your child growing and flourishing in ways that would never happen if they weren’t in pre-school. That’s why we’re committed to making sure every kid in Bridgeport has access to quality early childhood education.”
“We all know what the research tells us: If kids aren’t reading at the level they should be by third grade, they’re less likely to graduate. That is why early childhood education is so essential if we want to prepare our kids for 21st century jobs,” Mayor Finch added.
After adding 366 new slots in the last year, more than 90 percent of three and four year olds have access to pre-K education in Bridgeport. Yet only two-thirds of the kids attend pre-K programs, said Superintendent Rabinowitz.
“Working together, with everyone in this room and the community, I know we will increase that number,” she said.
In her year as superintendent, Rabinowitz said, she has learned that the value of partnerships is “immeasurable” and what can be accomplished working with the community “moving all of us toward a common goal.”
“I’m very honored and pleased to be working with the mayor, and he has the vision for this universal pre-school. Working with him we are going to be able to make it happen,” she said

#Bridgeport, Conn. (June 15, 2015) – Police seized two firearms, including an assault weapon, early Sunday and arrested two suspects after a community member reported a suspicious vehicle on Palm Street. “With the assistance of the community, we took two guns off the street and, based on statements from one of the suspects, prevented an armed robbery,” said Police Chief Joseph L. Gaudett Jr. “It was outstanding work by officers in cooperation with a resident, who saw something suspicious and reported it.”
Police recovered a loaded AK-47-style assault rifle and a loaded Taurus revolver.
At 1:00 a.m.Sunday, officers responded to Palm Street on a report of a suspicious vehicle. When officers arrived, the driver of the car sped off. As it fled, the vehicle struck a curb and blew out a tire. The driver continued to flee until he crashed at Glenwood Avenue and Chopsey Hill Road.
The driver and passenger then jumped out and tried to flee on foot. When he jumped out of the still-moving vehicle, the passenger, identified as Rashad Hodges, 25, of Willow Street, threw down the assault weapon.
The driver, Alberto Rojas, 32, was apprehended after a foot chase through a wooded area. Police found him hiding in a brushy area. In custody, he told police that “we were just trying to rob some drug dealer.”
Officers pursuing Hodges observed him throw a shiny object into a stream as he fled. He was taken into custody moments later. Police returned to the area where they saw Hodges throw the object and found a Taurus revolver in the shallow water. Police also recovered a camouflage mask and a pair of blue latex gloves.
“This is another illustration of what we can accomplish when police and the community work together,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “As a result of that cooperation, police took two illegal guns off the street and arrested two criminals who were intent on committing a robbery.”
Rojas was charged with motor vehicle violations and conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery. His bond was set at $20,000.
Hodges faces two counts of criminal possession of a firearm, criminal possession of an assault rifle, two counts of altering a serial number of a firearm, tampering with evidence and conspiracy to commit first-degree robbery. His bond was set at $75,00
