Ganim: City of Bridgeport Now Fining O&G Industries $100 per Day for Blight Violations

#Bridgeport, CT – As part of Mayor Joe Ganim’s new anti-blight initiative, the City of Bridgeport has begun to cite and fine O&G industries in Bridgeport $100 per day for violating city anti-blight ordinances by failing to clean up its substantial debris pile at its facility located at 1255 Seaview Avenue on the East Side of Bridgeport.  The large debris piles and the dust they create at the cement mixing facility have already resulted in numerous respiratory complaints from residents of the adjacent neighborhood.

“O&G’s debris pile is really starting to look like Mount Trashmore II – and we have had enough,”  said Mayor Ganim.  “This cement facility on the East Side of our city has been an eyesore for years, and now we are taking action because of the health risks to residents caused by the company’s negligence.  Every day this company fails to be a good neighbor and clean up its mountain of debris will be very costly.  The fines will build up by at least $100 per day, and if O&G fails to clean up its property it could lead to thousands of dollars in fines and a lien on the facility.  Obviously we hope that O&G starts behaving like a good corporate citizen but we will hold them accountable if they continue to act irresponsibly.  The health of Bridgeport residents is our top priority and we will not hesitate to protect our community.”

Pursuant to Bridgeport city ordinance 8.76.020, a property and the owner can be found in violation of anti-blight ordinances when “It is determined by the city that existing conditions pose a serious or immediate danger to the community; i.e., a life threatening condition or a condition, which puts at risk the health or safety of citizens of the city.”  Under the anti-blight ordinance, O&G has 15 days to respond to the city citation or clean up the property, or face a fine of up to $1,500 as well as a hearing.  After 30 days without cleanup, the company faces a fine of $3,000 and the city could take legal action to impose a lien on the property, impairing further transactions such as the sale of the facility until the lien is paid.

State Police Task Force Arrests Convicted Felon for Firearms Possession

#Bridgeport, CT. (August 8, 2016): State Police and Bridgeport Police detectives assigned to the Connecticut State Police Gang Unit arrested a convicted felon for possession of a firearm. On August 8, 2016 the Connecticut State Police Statewide Urban Violence Cooperative Crime Control Task Force (SUVCCCTF)/Gang Unit, which consists of Connecticut State Police detectives and Bridgeport Police detectives, with assistance from the Connecticut State Police Statewide Organized Crime Investigative Task Force (SOCITF), and detectives from the Bridgeport Police Department, apprehended convicted felon Raul Zayas, on an active felony warrant held by the Bridgeport Police Department for firearm-related offenses.

The felony arrest warrant stemmed from Zayas’ involvement in a recent shooting in the city of Bridgeport.  This investigation began when SUVCCCTF detectives developed information that Raul Zayas was in possession of a firearm, and was keeping it at 556 Capitol Ave. apt #3 in Bridgeport CT.  After corroborating this information through investigative techniques, the task force detectives obtained a search and seizure warrant for the Capitol Ave. residence.

On August 8, 2016 Raul Zayas was observed exiting the residence and entering a vehicle.  The task force officers were able to stop Raul Zayas’ vehicle a short distance later in the city of Bridgeport.  As the detectives attempted to approach the vehicle Raul Zayas was driving, Zayas attempted to flee, and intentionally struck a police vehicle that was positioned to prevent his escape.  There were no injuries reported. Raul Zayas surrendered to detectives and was taken into custody without further incident.  Zayas was found to be in possession of 2.8 grams of crack cocaine and $541.00 of U.S. currency.

Once Zayas was in custody task force detectives, with the assistance of detectives from the Connecticut State Police Statewide Narcotics Task Force (SNTF) Southwest Office, executed the search and seizure warrant at 556 Capitol Ave. in Bridgeport.  Detectives found evidence that Raul Zayas had been residing at the Capitol Ave. location, and seized a loaded .45 Caliber semi-automatic handgun from his bedroom. Raul Zayas was transported to Troop G-Bridgeport where he was processed on charges related to the incidents:

Arrested: Raul Zayas (dob 7/25/90)    Charges: Criminal possession of a firearm

556 Capital Ave. apt. #3  Bridgeport, CT.

Criminal possession of ammunition     Possession of narcotics        Reckless endangerment

Raul Zayas was then remanded to the custody of Bridgeport Police on arrest warrants held by the Bridgeport Police Department.
