2019-05-17 @ 2:56pm–#Westport CT–Westport Fire was dispatched to Newtown Turnpike for a reported wall collapse with a victim trapped under the collapse. The initial response was Engine 6, Engine 4, Truck 1, Rescue 3 and the Shift Commander. Westport EMS and Westport PD also responded.
Engine 6 arrived and reported that this was a construction site accident, occurring during the installation of a below grade water line. A trench wall collapse had occurred, trapping one victim in the trench up to their waist. Two workers were in the trench at the time of the collapse but fortunately the second worker was not caught in the collapse. The trapped worker had been extricated by colleagues on the scene prior to emergency personnel arriving.
Fire, Police and EMS personnel stabilized and packaged the patient, who appeared to have sustained non-life threatening injuries, for transport to a local hospital. The immediate incident area was cordoned off for safety and security. Newtown Turnpike was shut down in both directions during the incident.
Fire Department units remained on scene until 6:43pm to assist the Occupational Safety & Health Administration representative with the investigation of the accident. At the time of writing, there was no update on the condition of the injured party. (Westport Fire Department Press Release)

2019-05-17 @ 7:09pm–#Bridgeport CT– Police are investigating a crash involving a motorcycle in the 3800 block of Fairfield Avenue near the Fairfield line. Witness said there was no collision with any other vehicle but that an SUV that did stop was the cause of the crash. The motorcyclist was alert and conscious and responding to EMs’s questions. The motorcyclist had riding gear on including a helmet. Police are investigating.

Police UPDATE:
On May 17, 2019 at approximately 14:52 hours, the Fairfield Police Department’s Emergency Communications Center received a report of a motor vehicle crash in front of Super Stop & Shop at 1160 Kings Hwy Cutoff, Fairfield. Shortly after receiving the report of the crash, the Emergency Communications Center received a report of a hold up alarm Peoples Bank inside the same Super Stop & Shop. Communications personnel madecontact with People’s Bank who stated they had just been robbed by an Indian male wearing a black jacket who had passed a written note demanding cash. The suspected received an undisclosed amount of cash and fled the store.
Fairfield Police Officers responded to the scene and immediately received information from witnesses that a sliver sedan type vehicle had fled out of the lot at a high rate of speed, causing a motor vehicle crash at the exit to Stop & Shop on Kings Highway Cutoff. The vehicle was then seen traveling east bound on Kings Highway Cutoff. Another witness then reported a vehicle with heavy front end damage had just entered I-95 southbound at Meadowbrook Road.
The Connecticut State Police, utilizing traffic cameras, observed a vehicle on the shoulder of I-95 Southbound near exit 17 in Westport. The vehicle matched the description given by witnesses and appeared to have heavy front end damage. The vehicle was stopped on the shoulder and the operator appeared to be examining the damage to his vehicle. As responding Fairfield Officers approached the area, the suspect returned to his vehicle and engaged Officers in a short pursuit. The vehicle exited the highway at Exit 17 and crashed nearby in Westport on Route 136 at Ferry Lane. The operator/suspect then fled on foot and Officers engaged him in a short foot pursuit. The suspect was located near the I-95 southbound entrance ramp, after having crossed all lane of travel on I95, and was taken into custody with the assistance of the Westport Police Department.
The suspect was identified as Nirav Patel (DOB 11/25/89) of New Britain, CT. Patel has been charged Robbery 2nd Degree, Larceny 4th Degree and Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree. He was additionally charged with Evading Responsibility of an Accident, Engaging in Pursuit, Reckless Driving and Failure to Obey a Traffic Signal. Patel is currently being held on a $100,000.00 bond.
2019-05-17 @ 2:56pm– #Fairfield CT– The People’s Bank located inside the Super Stop and Shop at the circle at 1160 Kings Highway Cut-Off was robbed. Police then received a call for a hit and run accident outside Stop and Shop’s driveway. The suspect fled out of the parking lot hitting a pick up truck spinning it around. The suspect’s vehicle then fled onto I-95 southbound with heavy front end damage. State Police reported locating the vehicle near exit 18. The vehicle got off exit 17 and ran down an embankment when Westport Police took the suspect into custody.

#Bridgeport, CT – Mayor Joe Ganim announced that for the fourth year in a row his administration is dedicating more than $250,000 in the Fiscal Year 2020 City of Bridgeport budget to fund the Mayor’s Summer Youth Initiative. A substantial portion of this allocation provides youth with summer employment opportunities while the balance is made available to local nonprofits planning summer opportunities for older youth. Young people between the ages of 14 to 21 looking for a summer job must apply before the Friday, May 31, 2019 deadline by 5:00 p.m. Participants will be interviewed and placed according to their interest to fill one hundred and twenty-five (125) available positions.
“It was important that we continued to provide our youth with safe and meaningful activities this summer,” said Mayor Ganim. “We are thankful for the partnerships we have built with local businesses and nonprofits that provide summer activities and give our young people the opportunity to gain real work experience. Summer vacation is a time that youth can have fun while learning a new skill that will serve them well as they grow into adulthood.”
In addition to the Mayor’s Summer Youth Initiative, the city’s Parks and Recreation Department also has jobs available for camp counselors and lifeguards. Young people interested in applying may do so in-person at the Parks Department office at 7 Quarry Road, Trumbull, CT.
