Westport, CT – Public Works Director Peter Ratkiewich announced that the town will host its Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Westport/Weston Health District, 180 Bayberry Lane. Collection will occur RAIN OR SHINE.
Westport’s Annual Household Hazardous Waste Day is a NO CHARGE regional program for residents of Westport, Weston, Greenwich, Darien, Stamford, Norwalk, New Canaan & Wilton, designed to provide a safe option to keep Household Hazardous Waste out of the municipal solid waste stream and protect our land and water from potential contamination.
Many of the items used around the house on a daily basis are considered to be household hazardous waste because they may contain corrosive, toxic, ignitable or reactive ingredients. Saturday 7:00 am – 12:00 pm. Antifreeze, motor oil, batteries of any type, fluorescent bulbs, compact fluorescent bulbs, smoke detectors and electronics may also be recycled at the Transfer and Recycling Center.

#Westport CT– Recently the Westport Fire Department has received inquiries from several residents who were solicited by telephone for donations to the Westport Volunteer Fire Department. The caller identified themselves as representing the Fire Department Foundation. To our knowledge no such organization exists. The Westport Volunteer Fire Department & the Westport Uniformed Firefighters Charitable Foundation are two fundraising organizations within the Westport Fire Department. We are both registered with the IRS as nonprofit corporations and we do not contract with any third party to solicit donations by telephone. We only seek support from the members of the Westport community through an annual town-wide mailing, never through telephone solicitation. Any organization calling a resident or business in Westport claiming to represent either of our organizations is not acting in our interests. We caution all residents and businesses to be on the alert for suspected phone scams such as this. Even if the organization is, in fact, legitimate, we do not receive any financial assistance from any third party firefighter’s organization. Please call (203) 341-5003 if you have any questions or concerns.

#Westport CT–The Westport Fire Department received official notification that we have been awarded $28,814 in federal funding to purchase and outfit our firefighters with Personal Escape Systems. A Personal Escape System is an essential component of a firefighter’s personal protective gear and consists of an anchoring hook, a descent device, life safety rope or webbing, a carabiner and a storage/ deployment bag. These essential pieces of equipment become integrated into a firefighter’s gear by connecting to a harness worn in the protective bunker pants. The equipment purchased with this grant will provide our firefighters with a rapid and effective means of egress should they become trapped by fire and need to bail out of a window. Additionally, it can be used to lower a victim to safety. For the last twenty years, our firefighters have issued a length of rope and a carabiner for this purpose which has proven an unrealistic option during an emergency. Tragically, numerous firefighters have been killed when forced to jump from a window without wearing a Personal Escape System. The Westport Fire Department recognized the importance of outfitting its firefighters with a Personal Escape System. A group of firefighters evaluated and wore various manufacturers systems over the course of two years to determine the best option available. Once a decision was reached, funding opportunities were researched, and thanks to the 2017 Federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant, the Westport Fire Department will receive $28,814 required for this purchase. Part of the grant money will provide training over the next few months on the new NFPA 1983, 2017 edition, certified personal escape systems.
