GOVERNOR LAMONT SIGNS LEGISLATION CRACKING DOWN ON STREET TAKEOVERS

(HARTFORD, CT) – Governor Ned Lamont today announced that he has signed into law legislation overwhelmingly approved by the Connecticut General Assembly (Public Act 25-80) that increases penalties and fines against individuals who participate in, organize, or spectate a street takeover, and provides police with more tools to combat these reckless situations.

The bill received support from municipal leaders and police departments throughout the state.

“This disruptive and dangerous trend, which has been increasing with frequency in states all over the country, puts people’s lives at risk and cannot be tolerated,” Governor Lamont said. “This bill gives state and local law enforcement and municipal leaders additional tools to protect the safety of our roads and our communities. It is the result of bipartisan input and advocacy, and I appreciate all who worked to advance this bill to my desk so that I could sign it into law.”

Among some of the bill’s several provisions includes increased license penalties for violating state laws against illegal street racing and street takeovers, including setting a two-year license suspension for anyone with three or more violations. It also authorizes municipalities to adopt their own local ordinances penalizing street takeovers, enabling towns and cities and their local police departments to respond to the specific challenges they face in policing this issue. Additionally, the bill empowers municipalities with the ability to destroy ATVs, dirt bikes, and mini-motorcycles seized from street takeovers.

The legislation is Public Act 25-80, An Act Concerning the Illegal Use of Certain Vehicles and Street Takeovers. It was approved in the Senate by a vote of 34 to 2, and in the House of Representatives by a vote of 144 to 4. The bill has various effective dates.

Responding patrol officers located a crime scene and two victims presented themselves at Bridgeport Hospital. Victim 1, age 26 and victim 2, age 18. Around the same time, another party, victim 3 age 24, also showed up at Bridgeport Hospital with a gunshot wound. This incident is being investigated by the DB CGIC with Detective Palatiello as the lead detective.

Chief Porter’s remarks on the shootings:

“As many of you know, overall crime in Bridgeport is down. That includes a noticeable drop in shootings — and that’s due to the hard work of our officers, community partners, and residents who continue to step up and speak out.

But despite that progress, last evenings two separate shooting incidents — where three people were injured — are a sobering reminder. Gun violence is still very real, and we cannot afford to let our guard down.

We take every shooting seriously. Each one impacts a family, a neighborhood, and the larger sense of safety in our city. That’s why we’re staying aggressive in our response — through targeted enforcement, neighborhood patrols, and continued collaboration with community leaders.

Let me be clear: Bridgeport is safer today than it was a year ago, and much safer than five years ago — but safer doesn’t mean safe enough. We still have work to do and we need the community with us. If you know something about these incidents, say something. Help us hold those responsible, accountable.

We’re committed. We’re focused. And we’re not letting up. Thank you.”

According to Bridgeport Police, at approximately 7:15pm, ShotSpotter Activation along with multiple reports of a party shot prompted Bridgeport PD to respond to the 40 block of Sheridan Avenue. Another incident occurred in the 100 block of Clifford Street around the same time, where one party was shot. A total of 3 victims were shot, 2 are in critical condition. The suspect(s) fled the scene and were apprehended on Route 8.
