BRIDGEPORT, CT – Congressman Jim Himes (CT-04) advised candidates seeking a congressional nomination for 2012 admission into one of the nation’s four military academies that applications are due to his office by 4:00pm on Friday, December 2nd. Applications are available on the Congressman’s website and from high school guidance counselors throughout the 4th District.

“One of my favorite duties as a Member of Congress is nominating the best and brightest young men and women of Connecticut’s 4th District to our nation’s service academies,” said Himes. “If you are a highly motivated, well-rounded, successful student, I invite you to consider the unique opportunity to develop physically, ethically, and intellectually while building a foundation for an exciting, challenging, and rewarding career as a military officer in the service of our nation.”

A panel of judges will review submitted applications and conduct interviews with candidates in mid-December. Candidates must be at least 17 years old, but not have passed their 23rd birthday by July 1 of the year of admission and live in the 4th Congressional district.

More information on the academy nomination process is available by calling the Congressman’s office at 866-453-0028 or by visiting the Academy Nominations page here.

2011 Service Academy Day

Congressman Himes also reminded students that the Connecticut Congressional delegation’s 2011 Military Service Academy Day is scheduled for Saturday, September 24, 2011 from 9:00am – 12:00pm at Middlesex Community College. Students should attend Academy Day if they are interested in applying to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, and Coast Guard Academy. This event provides candidates an opportunity to have their questions answered by staff from the Congressional delegation and academies, and gain a better understanding of each academy’s admission process.
