AG on Robocalls
Hartford CT– Attorney General William Tong released a statement in response to the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in Barr v. AAPC, which upheld the federal robocall ban. Earlier this year, Attorney General Tong joined a coalition of 33 states in filing an amicus brief in support of the ban.
Attorney General Tong’s statement is below:
“Every day, our office is working to end the nuisance and threat that robocalls and scams present to Connecticut residents. I am pleased the Supreme Court left the Telephone Consumer Protection Act ban on robocalls intact, and my office will continue to work tirelessly to protect the people of Connecticut,” said Attorney General Tong.
The Attorney General participates in a nationwide effort to track and trace illegal robocalling. This is especially concerning when robocallers attempt to cheat vulnerable citizens in Covid-19 related scams. If you have been targeted in a robocall scam, please forward that information to attorney.general@ct.gov with your phone number, the phone number used for the robocall and the date and time of the robocall.

Bill Requiring US Defense To Purchase 100% American Made Products
WASHINGTON—U.S. Senator Chris Murphy (D-Conn.), a member of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Committee, on Thursday introduced an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) for Fiscal Year 2021 that would increase the Buy American requirements on major defense programs to 100% domestic content. Currently, equipment that has only 50% of its content from U.S. suppliers is considered compliant with the Buy American Act. Requiring 100% of the products purchased by the Defense Department to be made in America will support U.S. manufacturers and create jobs. It will also protect our national security by defending the supply chain for our major defense programs against foreign disruptions.
Murphy’s amendment is endorsed by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM).
“When the government spends taxpayer dollars, our money should go to help American manufacturers. It’s just common sense. There is no shortage of talented manufacturers in Connecticut, who are making some of the best defense products in the world. My amendment will make sure that we’re pumping money into local economies and creating good paying jobs across the country at a time when we need them most,” said Murphy.
Murphy has been a champion of Buy American laws since his time in Congress. After hearing concerns in 2018 from a Connecticut-based drone manufacturer, Murphy called
on then U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis to ban Chinese-made commercial drones at the DoD and instead support U.S. drone manufacturers. DoD followed Murphy’s call and halted the purchase of all small commercial drones, including those made by Da Jiang Innovations. Additionally, Murphy secured
more transparency and critical protections for American companies against foreign-made drones in the Energy and Water Development Appropriations Act of 2019, which partially funds the Department of Interior. This was critical for national security and a “Buy American” victory for Connecticut-based companies that have to compete with artificially priced Chinese-made drones. Murphy’s provision banning the use of Chinese-made drones was included in the FY2020 National Defense Authorization Act. Murphy and U.S. Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) also introduced the American Security Drone Act of 2019 prohibiting the U.S. government from purchasing drones manufactured in countries identified as national security threats like Iran and China.
After a series of meetings and discussions with the White House and a U.S. General Services Administration feasibility rep
Earlier this year, Murphy was presented with the Warrior Protection and Readiness Coalition (WPRC) 2020 Sentinel Award for his legislative leadership on behalf of the domestic defense industrial base that supports U.S. service members and homeland security personnel. The Sentinel Award specifically recognizes members of Congress for their efforts to provide high quality, American-made personal protective gear, uniforms, footwear, and equipment to the Federal government at the best value to the taxpayer.

Fairfield News: Arrest In Fatal Hit And Run Crash
FAIRFIELD — Chief Christopher Lyddy reports that the Fairfield Police Department has arrested and charged a man in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash involving a pedestrian over the weekend.
DECLAN P. KOT, AGE 22, OF EASTON is charged with:
Misconduct with a Motor Vehicle (Class D Felony)
Evading Responsibility in Operating a Motor Vehicle Resulting in Death
Failure to Drive in Proper Lane
Operating a Motor Vehicle without Fenders
Tampering with Evidence
Operation of a Motor Vehicle with Tinted Windows without Tinting Sticker
Operation of Vehicle with Tinted Windshield
On Saturday, July 4 between 7:30-7:45 p.m., a pedestrian was struck and killed in the area of 2000 Redding Road. The operator of the vehicle fled the scene prior to the arrival of police.
The victim was visiting family in Fairfield and was walking her dog at the time of the crash. Two passing motorists found the victim lying in the roadway and called 911. She was later identified as Marileidy Morel Araujo, age 32, of Matamoras, Pennsylvania.
During the initial investigation, police were looking into the possibility of a dark-colored Jeep Wrangler being involved in the crash. Upon further investigation and based on additional evidence, it was determined that the suspect vehicle was not a Jeep Wrangler, but likely a larger vehicle.
A clear marker lens and other debris from the suspect vehicle were located by police at the scene.
On Monday, July 6, members of the Fairfield Police Quality of Life Unit, Crash Investigation Unit, and Easton Police canvassed the Redding Road area and made contact with residents on Redding Road who were able to provide video of the roadway during the timeframe that the crash occurred. The video revealed a White Dodge Ram pickup truck with black rims fleeing the area north on Redding Road with a large American flag flying from a pole attached to the rear tow hitch.
Evidence located at the scene was then identified by a local dealership as likely being from a Dodge Ram 2500 or 3500 between the model years of 2010 and 2016. Further investigation revealed that the truck likely had passenger side mirror damage and would likely be missing the lower plastic portion of the mirror and the corner light.
Additional video was obtained of the same vehicle at other locations throughout the day on July 4. Images of the vehicle were analyzed by detectives and a complete description and images of the suspect vehicle were distributed to law enforcement personnel. Crash Investigation, Traffic Unit, and Detective Bureau personnel continued their investigation and developed several leads and possible suspect information.
On Tuesday, July 7, Patrol Division personnel located a Dodge Ram fitting the description traveling on North Benson Road and conducted an investigative stop of the vehicle.
The operator of the vehicle was identified as KOT. KOT was subsequently interviewed at Fairfield Police Headquarters. Based on information obtained during the interview, an arrest warrant was issued for KOT on Wednesday, July 8. He was arrested at Fairfield Police Headquarters on July 8 at 8:45 p.m.
KOT is scheduled to appear at Bridgeport Superior Court on Wednesday, July 15. He was released after posting $150,000 bond with a condition that he not operate any motor vehicle pending arraignment before the Superior Court and permission being granted by the court.
“The collaborative and resolute efforts of all involved personnel are a shining example of the persistence, dedication and professionalism continually exhibited by the men and women of the Fairfield Police Department,” Chief Lyddy said. “We would like to again thank the several hundred individuals who provided potential leads and tips throughout the investigation.”
This incident remains under investigation by the Fairfield Police Crash Reconstruction Unit. Anyone with additional information or surveillance video is asked to contact Crash Reconstruction Supervisor Sgt. Michael Paris at mparis@fairfieldct.org or 203-254-4862.
First Selectwoman Brenda Kupchick said “The hit and run on Redding Road over the holiday weekend was a tragedy for the victim and her family. I hope at the very least this will serve as a reminder for residents to slow down and be alert while driving. I want to thank our entire community who came together with information to help solve this case. I’m proud of the quick work of the Fairfield Police Department that worked tirelessly to comb through the thousands of tips received from residents, the Easton Police Department for their assistance and to all the vigilant neighbors who stepped up to offer to be helpful. My thoughts and sincere prayers are with the young woman’s family during this very
difficult time.
These are allegations. All suspects are innocent until proven guilty.
Bridgeport News: Trumbull Garden’s Police Activity
2020-07-08 #Bridgeport CT– Quite a few of you reached out to me to ask about the police activity in the last two days at Trumbull Gardens. Many of you still don’t know that Mayor Ganim turned off the press radios for us, News12 and CT Post. In a time where the police should be more transparent, the mayor has taken the opposite approach. It hasn’t stopped us from reporting the more violent crimes though. Anywho, I contacted police spokesperson Scott Appleby who said: “community policing with high visibility patrols. We were also canvassing for suspects near Trumbull Gardens earlier today”
