TEAM Westport Essay Contest

#Westport Connecticut--  Three students—one each from Choate Rosemary Hall, Staples High School, and Green Farms Academy—have won TEAM Westport’s Teen Diversity Essay Contest, which is co-sponsored with the Westport Library. The annual contest is open to high school students who reside in Westport or who attend school in Westport. In light of the many recent demonstrations in cities and on college campuses, this year’s contest asked students to consider the state of race relations in our country, “both the nature of the problem and the appropriate way to address divisions and inequities in our society.”   First prize winner for the second year in a row is Jacob Klegar, now a senior at Choate Rosemary Hall. Westport News: Operating Under the Influence

On 05/19/16 at approximately 1:00am, Ryan Gussen was stopped by the Westport Police for almost crashing into the guardrails on the Sherwood Island Connector, and waiting at green lights. Gussen was slurring his speech and was moving slowly. Officers performed the Standard Field Sobriety Tests and determined that Gussen was under the influence of narcotics and alcohol. Gussen was taken into custody. On his person, Officers located 2 Adderall pills and 2.5 Xanax pills in a pill container that should not have those pills in it. Westport Police Standoff Ends Peacefully

(Westport) This morning, at approximately 10:00am, Westport Officers responded to a Richmondville Avenue address on a minor civil dispute. Upon Officer’s arrival, the residents, Kyle and Carrie Owen, were in the driveway. Kyle and Carrie then retreated into the home and did not allow Officers to enter. Kyle then came to the door holding a hatchet and refused to come outside. Kyle was yelling and swearing at Officers and was seen walking aggressively in the house. It was determined that Kyle and Carrie were in the home with their juvenile child. Officers immediately set up a perimeter on the house and evacuated neighbors to safety. The Southwest Regional Emergency Response Team (SWRERT) was activated, with tactical officers and negotiators arriving at approximately 12:00pm. Negotiators from the SWRERT team…

Westport Fire Department Reminder

#Westport Connecticut--Even with all the rain we received over the last few days the Westport Fire Department responded to a wood shingled roof fire that started from a discarded cigarette. The fire was quickly extinguished and the damage was limited to a few roof shingles, but this could have been a disaster for the homeowner if it had not been quickly spotted. The Fire Department would like to remind everyone to use care when discarding any smoking material. The Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection has set the forest fire danger at “moderate” but this will quickly worsen given the forecast for this week. Westport News: Bank Disturbance

#Westport Connecticut---On 04/26/16 at approximately 5:30pm, Westport Officers responded to Chase Bank, 184 Main Street, on a report of a disturbance. Officer Wong Won located Sarah  Woozley in the bank. Woozley was reportedly swearing at the Bank personnel and causing a disturbance. Woozley was asked several times to leave the bank which she refused. Woozley was then placed in handcuffs, where she then began to pull away and kick as she was led out of the bank. Westport News: Mom Unable To Care For Children

On 04/27/16, at approximately 9:00pm, Westport Police received a call from Lisa Gyselen, reporting an issue with an ex-boyfriend. Dispatchers determined that Gyselen was home with her 2 juvenile children, and she sounded intoxicated during the call. Officers responded to the Post Road West address to check on Gyselen’s welfare. Upon arrival, Officers were unable to speak with Gyselen as she was uncooperative, and yelling about things officers could not understand. Officers smelled the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on Gyselen. She was unsteady on her feet, and need to lean on the wall to support herself. Officers attempted several times to speak with Gyselen away from the children, but she continued to yell and act belligerently to the Officers in front of the children. Based on…

On 04/18/16 at approximately 1:45am, Westport Police Officer Michael Gudzik noticed a suspicious male standing near the intersection of Compo Rd North and Cross Highway holding an umbrella (weather was clear) and speaking on his cell phone. Officer Gudzik approached the individual, later identified as Tyler Johnson. Through the investigation, Officer Gudzik determined that the suspect was in possession of items that did not belong to him. Investigation revealed that the items recovered at the scene were stolen from a vehicle parked in a driveway in close proximity to where Officer Gudzik located the suspect. While speaking with JOHNSON, additional responding Officer’s located a vehicle parked on the side on the road further north on Compo Rd North.
