On Tuesday, October 1st, 2013 at 4:20 pm, Fairfield Police and Fire Department personnel responded to 1625 Bronson Road, a private residence for a report of a burglary and possible hazardous materials at that location.

Personnel secured the scene and requested the assistance from Federal, State and local agencies. It was determined by Connecticut State Police and CT D.E.E.P that explosive and flammable materials found in the home needed to be removed for public safety.

On Monday, October 07, 2013 the resident Joseph Callahan DOB 11/15/43 of 1625 Bronson Road Fairfield, CT 06824 was arrested at Fairfield Police Department. Callahan was charged with (11) counts of Illegal Possession of Explosives, (1) count of Manufacturing Bombs and (6) counts of Reckless Endangerment 1st degree. A conditional promise to appear in court was issued in lieu of bond. The terms of his release are to cooperate with authorities to remediate his property. Callahan’s court date is October 16th, 2013.

Fire officials report Mr. Callahan is fully cooperating with the investigation and remediation by offering to do whatever is necessary to quickly and safely mitigate this situation including authorizing the removal and disposal of any chemicals that the Fire Marshal’s office and the CT D.E.E.P deem hazardous.

 

Police and Fire officials and HazMat technicians will remain on scene to confirm compliance with all court orders.
