Utility Scam warning from Sergeant Jillian Cabana, Westport Police Detective Bureau

Utility Company Scams- These scams commonly involve a person(s) that arrives at your home and pretends to be a member of one of the local utility companies (water, sewer, electric). They often ask to be shown to the basement or to be led into another room to check the water pressure meanwhile, allowing a second person to enter and steal from the victim’s home (usually jewelry, small electronics, or cash) while the homeowner is distracted. If you did not call the utility company and request for them to come to your home for service, you can deny them entry and call the police. Officers will be dispatched and can attempt to locate the person and determine whether or not they are in fact employed by the utility company. You can also contact your utility company and attempt to confirm.
