12:02am–#Bridgeport CT–Just after midnight firefighters received a call from police on routine patrol of a fire at 150 Beers Street.  Police reported heavy smoke on the second floor but no fire.  When firefighters arrived they found heavy fire in the basement which found its way to the upper levels.    Homeowner Fred Savino told me that he was asleep with his wife and three children when fire broke out.  “This first thing I did was go for the children” Savino told me.  All made it out safely although the temperature was 13 degrees.  The cold temperatures did cause some issues as the second fire hydrant firefighters attempted to get water from on Fairmont Avenue was frozen.  Firefighters made do with water on the firetrucks and  a working hydrant on Beers Street.   The family’s dog also made it out safely but is still on  loose at the time of this writing at 3am.  There were no reported injuries.  The fire marshal was called to the scene to investigate the cause of the fire.
