The Bridgeport Police Department is investigating the cause of death and the identity of a man found floating in the Beardsley Park pond on Sunday afternoon.

Two fishermen reported seeing an unresponsive body in a remote area in the northern part of the pond, known as Bunnell’s Pond, at approximately 3:51 p.m. Sunday. Patrol officers, detectives, firefighters and medics responded. An investigator with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner arrived a short time later.

The body was removed from the pond by the Bridgeport Fire Department. It was extremely decomposed.

The man may have been in the water for a week, or more. He was clothed and was carrying several personal items.

An autopsy was scheduled for Monday morning at the OCME in Farmington. Detectives are working with the medical examiner to determine the man’s name and notify his family. They may have to use forensic science to confirm his identity.

Detectives do not believe foul play is involved in the death. They are looking at recent missing persons reports.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Stavros Mirtsopoulos at: (203) 581-5256.
