6:00pm--#Bridgeport CT--Bridgeport Firefighters were called for a porch fire in the back of 246 Lexington Avenue. The fire was out within the six minutes it took me to drive to the scene. The fire extended to the second and third floor porch but did not appear to extend into the apartments.
Chariots of Hope is a Connecticut-based, nonprofit organization that collects used wheelchairs and then refurbishes and distributes them to people around the world. Efforts are underway to raise public awareness about the need for this service and to encourage people who own wheelchairs that are no longer in use to donate them to this worthy cause. There are nearly 20 million children and adults around the world who could make use of the wheelchairs that now sit idle in people’s attics and basements. Chariot’s next major collection effort is the 16th annual “Day of 1000 Wheels.” The goal is to collect 300 wheelchairs in one day, Saturday, June 6, 2015. This will include a $2.8 billion increase for infrastructure over the next five years, including $1.77 billion for rail, $613 million for highways, $281 million for bridges, $101 million for bicycle and pedestrian trails, and $43 million for bus service. 7:45pm--#Fairfield CT--Firefighters were once again dispatched to 100 Thorpe Street. The property owners were on scene and would not let me anywhere near the property. So I visited my news friends Beth and Paul on Ruane Street where I recorded the fire last night. Smoke was visible and the sound of the firefighter's chainsaws could be heard. Radio reports verified that 3 lines are in use to fight tonight's fire.
Spotted these gentlemen enjoy a game of chess at McLevy Green this afternoon.
UPDATE: Bridgeport Police spokesman Tim Hammil : A boater discovered the body of a female floating in Long Island Sound approximately five miles south of Bridgeport Harbor. The Bridgeport Police Marine Unit responded and recovered the woman. She was pronounced dead and was taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME). An autopsy will be conducted tomorrow to determine the cause and manner of death. The woman did not have any identification on her and there was no report of any waterborne emergency in the area. At this point, she remains unidentified. Her race is not readily apparent. She is about 5’3” tall and appears to be in her 20’s or 30’s. She has a medium to slightly stocky…
