On Tuesday 9/20/11 at 10:42 pm, the Fairfield Police received a report of a
burglary/home invasion from the victims of a home on the north end of Park
Avenue. Reported fleeing on foot, were three or four male suspects possibly
Hispanic with accents, they were wearing all black clothing and masks covering
their faces, one suspect had displayed a handgun.

Fairfield with the assistance of Bridgeport Police arrived to find two elderly
victims a husband and wife, frightened and injured from their attackers. They
reported being awakened by the sound of the doorbell ringing followed by glass
breaking. The husband entered the hallway and was confronted by one suspect
who held him brandishing a handgun. Two or three other suspects ran from room
to room going through his belongings. The wife stood by watching the suspects
and unable to assist her husband until they fled the home, at which time she
called “911”. As the suspects fled, the husband described what sounded like a
single gunshot from the outside.

Taken from the residence was a small amount of cash and jewelry. Through
interviews of the victims it is believed they were specifically targeted and this is
not a random act.

Officers and Detectives will continue the investigation working to provide
assistance to the victims and processing the scene to recover evidence.

Mayor Bill Finch is proud to announce that the City of Bridgeport is switching to single stream recycling, and expanding its partnership with Recyclebank, the national company that rewards residents for recycling through strategic partnerships, both local and national. City residents began receiving the new, blue recycling Toters in mid-August and deliveries are nearly complete throughout the City.

Residents were able to begin using the Toters for all their recyclables, including plastics #1-7, drink cartons, cardboard, glass, cans and foil containers, and all newspapers, junk mail and recycled paper.

Residents can sign up for Recyclebank rewards either by phone or online, and be eligible to receive points to use toward discounts and deals from hundreds of businesses, including many local firms that have signed on to the program.

“The more our residents recycle, the more money the City saves in tipping fees at the trash plant,” said Mayor Finch. “Single stream recycling is convenient for our residents — no more sorting, it all goes into the blue bin. And, by expanding our partnership with Recyclebank to include all city residents, it will make it even more attractive for everyone to recycle; the more residents recycle, the more points they will earn toward discounts they can use at local and national businesses.”

BRIDGEPORT, CT (September 20, 2011) –  Sidewalks have been installed, and storm drainage has been upgraded along Gilman Street in the City’s Black  Rock neighborhood as part of the City’s Bridgeport@Work capital improvements plan.

Approximately 1,100 feet of new concrete sidewalks and curbs have been installed along Gilman from Courtland to the existing stone dust walking path that runs to St. Mary’s by the Sea. The stone dust walkways have been upgraded as well, in keeping with the natural setting along the water’s edge. The project cost $141,363.

“St. Mary’s by the Sea is one of the most popular attractions in our City. These sidewalk upgrades will make visiting the park a safer and more enjoyable experience.”

“This project will make it easier and safer for residents to walk along that section of Gilman Street where there were previously no sidewalks,” said 130^th District Council representatives Susan Brannelly and Martin McCarthy, both of whom were supportive of this project in their district.

Bridgeport–Police investigate a shooting that took place at 245 Beardsley Street shortly after 10pm Monday night. Police say one unidentified man was shot and sent to an area hospital.   Terrance Garvin, of Deforest Avenue of Bridgeport sustained three gun shot wounds  (neck, leg, arm, all on right side).   The victim was found in a common hallway of 245/247 Beardsley Street bleeding profusely. Garvin was subsequently transported to Bridgeport Hospital for treatment and was listed in stable condition. It’s unclear of the motive for the shooting.

Detectives are continuing their investigation into the incident, no suspect(s) have been identified. Anyone with information to this shooting is ask to call the Bridgeport Police Detective Bureau at 203-581-5201

The Breakfast Challenge will be held on Wednesday, September 21st, 8 A.M. at Circle Diner, 441 Post Road, Fairfield. The event, in its’ 7th year, has grown to be one of the major fund raiser for The Kennedy Center, a non-profit organization that provides programs and services to persons with disabilities and special needs in our community. Rep Tony Hwang said of The Kennedy Center, “the array of services they provide are invaluable not only for the client, but also their family and our community. The Kennedy Center empowers people with intellectual disabilities with the skills and opportunity to lead a productive and fulfilling life of their choosing. Fairfield–A one car accident occurred just before 7:30pm Thursday on Pine Tree Lane.  Apparently a dog inside the van got caught up in the controls of the van  and feet of the driver causing it to crash into a stone wall right in front of and elderly complex on Pine Tree Lane.  The dog may have been distracting the driver for some time.   A Fairfield Police Explorer called police andwas following the van from Home Depot (about 2 miles) thinking it might be a drunk driver since the driver was having trouble staying in his lane.  There were no injuries reported.

3:14pm–#Fairfield–Police on the way to 2154 Fairfield Beach Road. Home was deemed not safe and posted and defying Chief Felner’s orders (he is on scene) with carpenters performing work on the house.   The house was damaged by Hurricane Irene and apparently condemned unsafe for occupancy.

5:05pm–#Seymour–Police conduct a thorough search of the  Nauguatuck River after passengers of passing train say they saw a red vehicle in the river.  Search suspended at 5:25     According to Assisstant Fire Chief of Seymour James
Smith. Passenger on Waterbury line train thought they saw part of red car in river but firefighters from Beacon Falls and Seymour found nothing.  Special thanks to Tony Spinelli of the Valley Indy Sentinel for the report from the fire department!

11:30am–#Bridgeport–EMTs report the man who was reported to have passed out on the city bus on Main Street simply feel asleep and missed his stop. He is now walking to the mall.

Norwalk—A bank robbery just occured at the TD Bank on Main street near route 7 and 123. Robber threatened he had a gun but no gun seen. Police are looking for a black male 18-25 with scruffy features including scruffy beard red hat black jacket with gloves, baggy pants and white sneakers, Left on foot. He was given money with tear gas and a dye pack.
