Festival de las Chiringas – Festival of Kites

Festival de las Chiringas – Festival of Kites.. Did you learn to fly a kite as a kid or even as an adult, soaring high in the sky? Many children learn to fly a kite sometime during their lives. In the United States there are Kite Festivals through out the States and in Puerto Rico.

El Festival de Chiringas, or Festival of Kites, takes place every year through out the Island of Puerto Rico. Some towns/cities like Old San Juan, Aguadilla, San Lorenzo, Vega Alta, Lajas and others celebrate el Festival de Chiringas, a family oriented festival.

This year the Puerto Rican Parade of Fairfield County will be honoring some individuals who have soared high, like the kites, and have helped our organization during this past year.

Mayor Finch, Monroe First Selectman Steve Vavrek to join riders on new bus route to Monroe

WHAT:On Thursday, February 27, Mayor Bill Finch and Monroe First Selectman Steve Vavrek will join riders on the new bus service between Bridgeport and Monroe along Route 25. Mayor Finch and First Selectman Vavrek will board the Route 20 bus at Westfield Trumbull Mall and join riders for the trip to Monroe along Route 25.

The service is designed to provide morning and afternoon employment-related
transportation to the area, according to Doug Holcomb, CEO for Greater Bridgeport Transit. The service is similar to GBT’s Route 19 Express which already serves Trumbull and Monroe along Route 111.

“The creation of Route 20 is an excellent example of what can be accomplished with regional cooperation. Thanks to the collaborative efforts of GBT, the City of Bridgeport, the Town of Monroe and the Greater Bridgeport Regional Council, we’re able to get Bridgeport residents to and from Monroe while also cutting down on the amount of vehicular traffic along that corridor – a priority of Bridgeport’s BGreen2020 sustainability initiative,” said Mayor Finch.

First Selectman Vavrek also lauded the new bus line as “another example of the benefits of regional cooperation in municipal government, and the synergies generated by cooperation among Monroe, Bridgeport and Trumbull” inside the framework of the Greater Bridgeport Regional Council.

Assignment Editors Please Note: Mayor Finch and First Selectman Vavrek will be on hand at 7:30 a.m. at the Westfield Trumbull Mall bus stop (accessed via the Madison Avenue, Trumbull entrance to the mall) for interviews. They will be boarding the 8:09 a.m. bus to Monroe. Reporters are welcome to join them on the bus to interview riders as the bus makes its way to Monroe.

Beardsley Zoo Update

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – February 21, 2014 – Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is pleased to release its updated calendar for March, April, and May 2014. The Zoo has fun events for the entire family all year round, most of which are free with the cost of admission. Calendar subject to change without notice. Please check BeardsleyZoo.org or Facebook for the most up to date information.

 

Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo is closer than you think and open daily from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm. Please check the website for updated Winter Hours and admission rates.

Children under 3 and Zoo members are admitted free. Parking at the Zoo is free of charge.

March 17, St. Patrick’s Day

It’s St. Patrick’s Day! Time to shake your shamrock, groove your green, and ease on down the road to the Zoo! Kids in the Irish spirit wearing anything green today will be admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult. One free child admission per adult. Don’t miss our educational “Green Animal” scavenger hunt while you’re here!

This monthly 45-minute program for children 18 months to three years, who are accompanied by an adult, may include stories, games, activities, crafts, and live animals. This session, entitled “Fur, Feathers, and Scales” will explore the differences between mammals, reptiles and birds. The cost is $10 for Zoo members and one child; $15 for non-members and one child. Participants may sign up for either day. To make a reservation, pre-register by calling the Zoo’s Education Department at 203-394-6563.

 

April 16, Evening Lecture Series, 7:00 pm

The zoo’s evening lecture series engage audiences of all ages, especially lifelong learners, who have an appetite for delving deeper into the wonders of wildlife. Attending these programs allows visitors to live vicariously through our experts, who often have had incredible close encounters with creatures across the globe. Topic: TBA. $5 suggested donation. Refreshments will be served. Location: Hanson Exploration Station. Sponsored by Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo Volunteer Association.

 

April 26 & 27, Party for the Planet, 9:00 am – 3:00 pm

Join Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo to celebrate the 44th anniversary of Earth Day! Our Earth Day event is about encouraging local, organic, earth-friendly choices as a way of promoting better health for our planet and ourselves. Environmentally friendly vendors will be on hand with everything from green cleaning products and recycled fashion accessories to better lawn care for you and wildlife! We’ll have a special citizen science corner to learn about online science projects you and your family can participate in. Come learn what you can do to make the planet a healthier place for you and your family.

May 11: Mother’s Day

Connecticut’s only zoo wants to thank all moms working so hard throughout the year. Bring your mom to the Zoo on Mother’s Day and her ticket is on us! Enjoy this special day together by visiting our animals or having lunch in our Peacock Pavilion.

 

May 13 & 14: Zoo Tots, 10:30 am

This session, “Garden Critters” will focus on animals that like gardens. $10 for Zoo members and one child; $15 for non-members and one child. Participants may sign up for either day. May 16 – 18: Endangered Species Weekend, 9:00 am – 3:30 pm

Endangered species awareness events encourage people of all ages to learn about the importance of protecting endangered animals and plants and what actions can be taken to help preserve their future. Participate in a scavenger hunt featuring exotic and domestic endangered animals! Sponsored by Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo AAZK Chapter.

 

May 17: Pet Awareness and Adoption Day, Noon – 3:00 pm

Join the Zoo for Pet Awareness and Adoption Day. Together with regional animal adoption and rescue organizations, you’ll learn about the wonderful animals we live with every day – our pets! We’ll host experts on pet care and safety, present crafts for the kids and other surprises. Take part and learn about caring for your family’s best friend.

 

May 17: Armed Forces Day

Veterans and active service people are free and their family (up to 6 individuals) receives a 15% discount on admission.

WEEKEND: GOV. MALLOY ATTENDS NATIONAL GOVERNORS ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE

(HARTFORD, CT) – On Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Governor Dannel P. Malloy will join a bipartisan group of the nation’s governors at the National Governors Association’s 2014 Winter Meeting in Washington, DC.  The meeting is an opportunity for governors to discuss issues affecting states, share innovative solutions, and look for ways to strengthen the state-federal partnership.  Topics being discussed will include job creation, education reform, improvement of infrastructure, restructuring of health care, and the development of energy resources.  Governor Malloy serves as vice chair of the organization’s Natural Resources Committee.

Governor Malloy will also be attending events at the White House and a meeting of the Council of Governors, which President Obama appointed him

to last year.
