Fire broke out shortly after 9:30pm

Shortly after 9:30 pm Friday nigh firefighters received a call for a house fire at 78 Cambridge Street.  A police officer arrived on the scene first and confirmed to firefighters that the homeowner evacuated the home and the house was empty of occupants.  Assistant Fire Chief George Gomola told us that they still did a primary search and found and rescued the homeowner’s cat which suffered no ill effects.  The homeowner was taken to the hospital just as a precaution.   Gomola said the fire was confined to the first floor of the home but some fire did extend behind the walls and the cedar shingles.  No firefighters were injured battling the blaze.
