Video Report— Northeast Utilities  presented five Bridgeport non-profit organizations with more than $1.7 million in tax credits designed to promote construction of low- and fixed-income housing.

 “Quality affordable housing is such a priority in all cities and this financial assistance is such a boon,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “The non-profits do such important work on very tight budgets. Northeast Utilities’ assistance is greatly appreciated.”  

Tax credits were awarded to Neighborhood Trust, Inc. ($500,000); Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County ($429,000); Boston Avenue Supportive Housing (Alpha)($205,882); Seymour Hollander Apartments ($500,000), and Mutual Housing of Association ($100,000).

Child left unattended, shoplifting, drinking and crack pipe

#Westport CT–#Bridgeport CT–On 12/04/2013, Eleanor Cobb of Bridgeport, CT was arrested after officers were dispatched to a report of a child left unattended in a motor vehicle. A four year old child was located in the vehicle while Cobb was shopping in a nearby store.

Cobb admitted she had been drinking and had a “crack pipe” in the vehicle. Officers learned that she had also shoplifted from Walgreen’s. Cobb was charged with 53-21 Risk of Injury to a Minor, 53a-125b Larceny 6th, and 21a-267(a) Possession of Drug paraphernalia. Cobb was released after posting $5,000 bond. She is scheduled to appear in Norwalk Superior Court at 0930 hours on 12/13/2013.

Mayor Finch Announces Creation of Mayor’s Youth Council

High School students can submit applications for consideration

 BRIDGEPORT, CT (December 10, 2013) — Mayor Bill Finch today announced that he is accepting applications for the 2014-2015 Mayor’s Youth Council. The new initiative provides youth a chance to learn about and participate in local government while serving in an advisory capacity to the Mayor on youth issues.

The Youth Council will be comprised of 10 high school students from across Bridgeport Public Schools and Vocational programs. Youth participants will build fundamental leadership skills and core competencies in policy change while working on community service projects related to education, violence/bullying, and environmental stewardship.

“My office is committed to building a new generation of young leaders who demonstrate a desire to be change agents in the Bridgeport community,” said Mayor Bill Finch about the new initiative. “As members of the council, youth will be required to attend city council meetings, participate in skill-building workshops, and job shadow high-level city officials.”

Members will be selected based on their desire to promote social change and leadership within their community. They may also be nominated for consideration by a school principal, guidance counselor, school superintendent, teacher, faith leader, or community leader.

Students interested in being considered for a spot on the Mayor’s Youth Council can download an application by visiting www.bridgeportct.gov/myc. Applications are due by January 7, 2014.

 About the Mayor’s Youth Council

The Mayor’s Youth Council was created by Mayor Bill Finch to empower youth in the City of Bridgeport. The council will assist city officials in the development of community projects from a youth’s perspective. The MYC is a program of the Office of Education and Youth Policy department in partnership with RYASAP, Junior Achievement, Career Resources, VIP College Prep, and other nonprofit supporters.
