FAIRFIELD, CT, April 3, 2016: On Sunday April 3rd at 06:50 PM, The Fairfield Fire Department responded to the Merritt Parkway southbound in the area of Merwins Lane in Fairfield.  Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir, the Fire Department Shift Commander (Car 3) arrived on scene and found a single vehicle on its side next to a tree.  The vehicle was not on fire as reported, and Car 3 established command.  Engine 5, under the command of LT Patrick Barry, arrived on scene, assessed a single patient in the vehicle and found he required rapid extrication.  Engine 5 driver stretched a precautionary hose line in case of fire. While Engine 5 personnel gained access to the vehicle.  Ladder 2 personnel arrived on the scene and provided extrication tools, made access through the windshield by sawing though the laminated glass, disentangled the airbag and provided a long board for a rapid extrication.  Westport Fire Department units arrived on scene and proceeded to stabilize the on its side motor vehicle to the tree.   Rescue 1 and Engine 2 arrived on scene and provided additional manpower.  The Westport Fire Department stabilized the vehicle and also provided additional extrication equipment if the mechanical extrication was needed.  Rapid extrication was performed by removal though the sunroof within eight minutes of arrival.  American Medical Response took control of patient care as soon as the patient was extricated.  Ladder 2 personnel disconnected the vehicle’s battery and all units demobilized.  AMR transported the patient to Saint Vincent’s Hospital.  Car 3 transferred command to Engine 5 at 7:23 PM.  Connecticut State Police remained on scene for the investigation.  Engine 5 remained on scene until the vehicle was removed by the towing company.  Engine 5 terminated command at 8:41 PM.  “A quick response and teamwork on the part of both the Fairfield and Westport Fire Departments this evening made this a very effective and efficient operation”, says Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir.
