On October 11th, 2021, a 16-year-old male Nigel Powell sustained a fatal gunshot wound while inside a residence on Valley Avenue, Bridgeport, CT. The incident was initially reported as a self-inflicted gunshot wound, however during the course of the investigation, and through multiple witness interviews, it was determined the gun was fired by another juvenile male. On October 18th, 2021, Detectives with the Bridgeport Police Department secured an arrest warrant for a 16-year-old male responsible for the fatal gunshot. The 16-year-old male turned himself in to the Bridgeport Police Department this evening and was served with the arrest warrant. The name of the responsible male is being withheld at this time due to him being a juvenile. The juvenile male is charged with Manslaughter in the 1st Degree with a Firearm, and additional firearm related offenses. The investigation was conducted by members of the Detective Bureau, Identification Unit, and the Patrol Division. Today’s arrest marks a closure of this case as this was an isolated incident.

Last night, shortly before 6 p.m., officers responded to Valley Ave on a report of a person shot. Upon arrival, officers located the victim, 16-year-old Nigel Powell. Powell had sustained a gunshot wound to his head. He was taken to Saint Vincent’s Hospital, where he later died. Originally reported as self-inflicted, however after further investigation was confirmed and according to witnesses, Powell was with three other juveniles, one of whom had a handgun. While one of the juveniles was playing with the gun, it went off and struck Powell. This currently is an active investigation.
