BRIDGEPORT TO HOST BACKPACK GIVEAWAY AND EDUCATION & LITERACY FAIR

BRIDGEPORT, CT โ€“ Bridgeport families are invited to take part in two back-to-school events on Saturday, August 15, 2026, beginning with the city's annual Backpack Giveaway at the Margaret E. Morton Government Center. The Backpack Giveaway will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at 999 Broad Street. Free backpacks will be available to Bridgeport students while supplies last. Students must be present to receive a backpack, proof of Bridgeport residency is required, and there is a limit of one backpack per child. The event is being supported by numerous city departments, community organizations, businesses, and sponsors working together to help Bridgeport students start the school year with needed supplies. Knife Attack

Bridgeport police and fire responded to the 520 block of Railroad Avenue to report of an assault. Upon arrival, two individuals had been in an altercation and one of them was cut on the chest with a blade. The individuals were separated, and the individual with the cut is being assisted by AMR. Basement Fire

Report of a fire in a basement at the 1400 block of Stillson Road in Fairfield. Firefighters arrived on scene and detected a small fire in the basement via a hot spot detector. They quickly put the fire out with no extension to the rest of the building. The fire is recalled at this time.

Low Speed Chase

A State Police 45 mph chase ensued on Old New Haven Ave by Chapel Street in Derby. The medium speed chase slowed to 40 mph before the car was hit by a spike strip, and the suspects fled on foot. UPDATE: Suspects were last seen in the Laurel Ave area of Derby, be advised if you are in the area.

Bridgeport Public Schools is inviting certified teachers, aspiring educators and candidates currently working toward certification to attend open interviews at Bridgeport City Hall.
