Here is an update on a story we brought you live as it was happening:
#Bridgeport, CT – June 27, 2014 – A city man faces charges in connection with two commercial robberies in the last two weeks.
Officer Anthony Mandolfo responded to the Mi Pueblo Restaurant at 3837 Main St. Thursday on a report of a robbery. A worker stated that a man entered the restaurant with his face covered with a bandana and pointed his hand, which was covered with white sock, as if he had a gun. She turned over cash.
A witness saw the man flee from the store and ride off on a bike.
The witness and a second man chased him on foot. As he fled, the suspect shed articles of clothing, threw down the money he stole and then hit a large stone, causing him to fall off of his bicycle. He attempted to flee on foot but was caught by one of the witnesses.
Officers Michael Gosha and Raymond Ryan took the suspect, Juan Carlos Velasco, 31, of Bridgeport, into custody. He was identified by the victim as the robber.
According to Detective Michael Fiumidinisi, Velasco fit the description of a man who held up a Subway restaurant on June 19. He appeared to be wearing the same sneakers and pants in both incidents.
Detectives interviewed him and Velasco subsequently provided a statement acknowledging that that he was responsible for both robberies. He faces charges of first degree robbery.
