#Westport CT-- On 09/23/2018 at approximately 5:30pm, Officer Ruta Pratt observed a vehicle traveling on Elm Street with no registration plate displayed. Officer Pratt initiated a motor vehicle stop at the intersection of Myrtle Avenue and Violet Lane and found the vehicle bore an expired Rhode Island temporary registration, which was later determined to be fraudulent. While speaking with the occupants, she detected a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The operator was identified as Kirk Brodie, 28, of Bridgeport, CT who claimed ownership of the vehicle. A backup officer arrived on scene and spoke to passenger Mark Elliot, 25 of Bridgeport, CT. UPDATE: A police report said a 9-year-old student had run out into the road and into the path of a southbound vehicle as she was trying to catch her school bus that stopped on Pinehurst Street. The striking vehicle was driving around a Greater Bridgeport Transit bus that had stopped for passengers at the same location. The child has a leg injury. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), in coordination with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), will conduct a nationwide test of the Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) and Emergency Alert System (EAS) on the backup date of October 3, 2018 due to ongoing response efforts to Hurricane Florence. The WEA portion of the test commences at 2:18 p.m. EDT, and the EAS portion follows at 2:20 p.m. EDT. The test will assess the operational readiness of the infrastructure for distribution of a national message and determine whether improvements are needed. The WEA test message will be sent to cell phones that are connected to wireless providers participating in WEA. This is the fourth EAS nationwide test and the first national WEA test. Malloy today announced that the State of Connecticut is receiving a $750,000 federal grant to provide mental health support to children and their families who were evacuated from their homes and are living in Connecticut as a result of Hurricane Maria.
