Governor Dannel P. Malloy and Connecticut Department of Housing (DOH) Commissioner Evonne M. Klein today announced that the State of Connecticut is launching a new, first-of-its-kind initiative that will focus on building supportive housing for youths between the ages of 18 to 24 who are homeless. November is National Homeless Youth Awareness Month and this funding comes at a time when Connecticut is focusing its efforts on expanding access to affordable housing opportunities for everyone. A statewide count of youth homelessness conducted in 2015 estimated that 3,000 unaccompanied youth under the age of 25 are experiencing homelessness in Connecticut. The creation of supportive housing specifically targeted for this demographic will help fill a meaningful gap in the housing continuum.…
On 11/18/16 at approximately 3:30pm, Westport Officers observed a male, whom they immediately recognized to be Leroy Williams, panhandling on the I95 southbound exit 17 off ramp. Officers asked Williams to leave the area. Williams appeared to be complying with the request as he began to gather his belongings and walk from the exit ramp into the intersection of Saugatuck Avenue. Williams then stopped in the middle of the intersection and began screaming that the officers were racist. Williams was asked to get out of the roadway and he refused. The intersection was congested with traffic, and while Williams stood in the roadway, southbound traffic was unable to pass and northbound traffic had to swerve to avoid hitting him. Again,…
BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (November 20, 2016) – The American Red Cross is helping 11 people after fires in Bridgeport and New Haven. The Red Cross is helping two families – five adults after a fire yesterday on Hallett Street, Bridgeport. The Red Cross is also helping four families – six adults after a fire today on Elm Street, New Haven. The Red Cross provided assistance to meet the families’ immediate needs. Responders included: Mike Vincelli, Ed Murray, Franklyn Ballentine, Mike Arthur, Sharon Harriott, Kendall Bobula and Sue Parker. The Red Cross is also providing comfort kits containing personal care items such as toothbrushes, deodorant; shaving supplies and other items a resident might not have been able to gather in the rush to escape the fire. On November 15, 2016 at approximately 2:40am, a motor vehicle stop was conducted on Myrtle Avenue. As the driver, identified as Cavan Devine, was looking for the paperwork (registration/proof of insurance) requested by the Officer a second officer noticed a glass smoking pipe in plain view. The pipe in question is of the type routinely used to smoke illegal narcotics. During a subsequent search of the vehicle, Officers located methamphetamine as well as several syringes (both new and used). As the vehicle was being searched Mr. Devine attempted to run from the scene, but was quickly apprehended. Mr. Devine was taken into custody and charged with Possession of Narcotics, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, and Interfering with an Officer. He was…
