Drone Assists Fairfield Firefighters

VIDEO REPORT–#Fairfield CT–Assistant Fire Chief Chris Tracy of the Fairfield Fire Department took time out his busy schedule to tell us how a drone assisted them in fighting the lumberyard fire Wednesday. Bridgeport Firefighter Keith Muratori (Rescue 5) has assisted firefighters in Bridgeport and neighboring towns with his drone to give firefighters a real time assessment of a fire’s progress from above. In this instance the quonset hut style warehouses were abandoned and firefighters only attempted an exterior attack so as not to risk their well being.   The aerial footage provided incident commander and firefighters in real time where hot spots were, if their streams were being effective or if they resources should be directed elsewhere. The footage Keith took were amazing.

Fairfield News: Massive Fire

Special Thanks to Paul and Beth for their hospitality in letting me record in their backyard to get this amazing footage.

At 7:05pm Fairfield’s Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting smoke visible rising from the southernmost warehouse on the site of the former Fairfield Lumber. Fairfield Fire Engines 1, 2, 4, 5, Ladders 1, 2 and Car 3 were dispatched, with Lt Jay Swindon on Engine 2 first on scene confirming a working structure fire.

Assistant Chief Erik Kalapir arrived on scene shortly and assumed command, calling for Engine 3 and an additional Ladder from Bridgeport. Bridgeport Fire Ladder 11 was dispatched, with Engine 10, Ladder 10, Safety 1 and Battalion 1 added to the assignment by Command.

Fairfield Fire Chief Richard Felner and Deputy Chief Kyran Dunn arrived on scene, with the Deputy assuming Sector Command at the rear of the building as fire extended into the center warehouse. Fairfield Fire’s Safety Officer, Fire Marshal and Inspector, and Master Mechanic, Building and Conservation Officials were on scene along with Southport Tactical 14, Stratfield Rescue 15, Fairfield Police, AMR, American Red Cross, United Illuminating and Aquarion.

Despite multiple large diameter hose lines and ladderpipes the fire extended to the northernmost attached warehouse where crews were able to contain and extinguish it. The fire was declared under control and recall of alarm declared by Command at 9:55pm, with all hands continuing to fight spot fires as crews started to take up hose lines.

Fairfield Reserve Engines 6 and 7 along with Car 33, Southport Squad 14, Westport Engine 2, Norwalk Engine 3 and Truck 2, Easton Engine 3, and Stratford Ladder 1 provided station coverage for the town as all on duty Fairfield personnel fought the fire. As of 10:44pm all Fairfield units along with Bridgeport Engine 10, Ladder 11 and Battalion 1 remain on scene extinguishing hot spots.

Sikorsky Announces Consolidation to Stratford

“Unfortunately, the global market for aircraft has prompted a consolidation of facilities. Their decision makes smart business sense for them. We’re glad there was no job loss and that Sikorsky will continue to pay taxes on the property it owns in Bridgeport. This also presents a unique opportunity for further growth in our Eco-Technology Park.” – Mayor Bill Finch

Bridgeport, Conn (June 2, 2015) – Today, Sikorsky Aircraft Corp. announced it will move  its Bridgeport operations at 1210 South Ave. to its facility in Stratford. There will be no loss of jobs for the workers currently at the Bridgeport plant. The employees will be shifted to the Stratford facility as part of the company’s consolidation.

“Unfortunately, the global market for aircraft has prompted a consolidation of facilities,” said Mayor Bill Finch. “Their decision makes smart business sense for them. We’re glad there was no job loss and that Sikorsky will continue to pay taxes on the property it owns in Bridgeport. This also presents a unique opportunity for further growth in our Eco-Technology Park.”

“The decision by Sikorsky to close its Bridgeport South End plant, a location that has been a part of their manufacturing  plant inventory for many years, and recently employed hundreds of workers, does not come as a surprise,” Timpanelli added.  “Sikorsky, a long-time quality employer in our region and specifically in Bridgeport, is in the process of consolidating manufacturing functions around the world to better position the company to compete in an ever-changing global marketplace. Part of that consolidation strategy is to make the company more efficient, lean and productive. These Bridgeport-based jobs will be, for the most part, transferred to the Stratford location, and, therefore not lost to our region. Sikorsky, we are confident, will continue to be a major regional employer and positive regional economic force.

“The good news here is that the South End Sikorsky plant will provide Bridgeport with much needed inventory of clean, usable manufacturing space located within Bridgeport’s increasingly desirable Eco-Technology Park,” said Timpanelli. “Because of what we have been able to achieve in partnership with the city over the last few years, the South End Sikorsky plant will now be perfectly positioned for reuse, it will be near new sources of renewable, clean energy that will critically reduce power costs, and it will be in a renewed neighborhood with many new companies and added tax incentives that come with the formalization of the “Eco-Park”.

Bridgeport’s economy also is growing with major economic development projects downtown and at Steelpointe, creating hundreds of new jobs and adding millions of dollars to the tax rolls. Steelpointe Harbor is a 52-acre peninsula off of the Long Island Sound. Construction is underway there for a new Bass Pro Shop and a Starbucks and Chipotle restaurant. And that’s just the beginning.  Once complete, Steelpointe Harbor will serve as a 2 million square foot super regional waterfront, featuring more than 750,000 square feet of retail, restaurants and entertainment, a 12-screen premium theater, two hotels, 1,100 mid-and-high rise residential units, 30,000 square feet of office and a 200-slip full service deep water marina.

Bridgeport News: Police Crime Scene Van at Greene Homes

UPDATE: Police spokesman Tim Hammoll returned my call and said there is an investigation taking place, there is no death at the building.  This and a DOA (dead on arrival) call have been on the radios since this morning, I probably blended the calls since I don’t usually report DOA’s.

#Bridgeport CT–A person was found dead in their apartment at Greene Homes Building 4 on the 7th floor.  It does not appear to be a crime but detectives are on scene investigating, that’s why the Bridgeport Police Crime Scene van is out there.  If I get any updates I’ll let you know.
