BRIDGEPORT, CT – The Bridgeport Public Library is welcoming September with a variety of programs for children, teens, adults, and families, including a visit from Connecticut’s Kid Governor, activities for young creators, chess clubs, yoga classes, and an online author talk.
On Tuesday, September 1, teens ages 12 to 19 can take part in Comic & Manga Hour from 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. in the Burroughs-Saden Teen Room. The program will feature discussions, crafts, and selections from favorite shows and movies while introducing teens to library services including Kanopy, Libby, and Hoopla. No registration is required.

The Newfield Branch will welcome Connecticut’s 2026 Kid Governor Tessa Hallinan and Cabinet Member Alyvia Stoddard on Saturday, September 12, at 2:00 p.m. Visitors can learn about Tessa’s “Everyone Belongs” platform, what it is like to serve as Kid Governor, and how fifth-grade students can participate in this fall’s election for the 2027 Kid Governor. The free program will also include a hands-on activity and refreshments.

From September 21 through September 30, young people ages 10 to 18 can participate in “Remix the Future by & for Youth” at the Burroughs-Saden Children’s and Teen Rooms. Participants will be challenged to develop ideas for creating a healthier planet and can design a “Love Your Planet” keychain promoting an environmental cause, with selected designs turned into professionally printed keychains.
On Wednesday, September 23, the Newfield Branch will host “Playful Engineers: Chain Reactions Workshop for Kids” from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. Children will use everyday materials including dominoes, ramps, pulleys, and levers to design and build their own chain reaction machines. Registration is required and can be made by calling 203-576-7828 ext. 105.
The library is also continuing several recurring chess programs. The Beardsley Branch Chess Club for Kids, for ages 6 to 11, meets Mondays from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. The Burroughs-Saden Teen Center Chess Club, for ages 12 to 18, meets Wednesdays from 4:00 to 4:45 p.m., while the Newfield Branch offers Chess for Beginners for all ages Wednesdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Yoga classes are also offered at multiple branches. The North Branch hosts yoga Saturdays from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., while the Black Rock Branch offers classes Thursdays from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Adults can also join a live online author talk on Tuesday, September 1, at 2:00 p.m. with award-winning historian David O. Stewart, author of “The Democracy We Must Keep: Why the Ideas that Built America Still Matter.” Stewart will discuss the ideas and documents that helped shape American democracy and their continuing relevance today.
The library is also remembering Dolly Parton and her longtime support of childhood literacy through the Imagination Library. Patrons can borrow several of Parton’s books and access her music and other digital materials through library services.
