Westport Police Department Reports Residential Mail Theft
(Westport, CT) On Tuesday, October 20, 2026, the Westport Police Department responded to multiple reports of mail that had been discarded in various neighborhoods. Investigation suggests that these recovered items had been stolen from the mailboxes of private residences. These thefts are believed to have occurred in the early morning/overnight hours of this same date.
At present, open and otherwise discarded mail and opened packages have been recovered in neighborhoods on the south side of town, specifically the Hillspoint Road, Prospect Road, Greens Farms Road and Compo Beach areas. Most of these pieces of mail originated from these same neighborhoods. Officers are working to notify those affected; however, it is apparent that there are numerous victims. It is likely that these recovered items had been sorted through by the thieves who were seeking and/or removed items of value and checks, credit cards, etc. An investigation into the suspected offender(s) is currently active and on-going.
Mail and package theft can occur when deliveries are left unattended or mail remains in unsecured locations for extended periods. Residents can help reduce opportunities for theft by following these simple safety tips:
• Retrieve mail and packages as soon as possible after delivery.
• Arrange for a trusted neighbor to collect deliveries when away from home.
• Use secure delivery locations, parcel lockers, or signature confirmation when available.
• Sign up for delivery notifications and track expected packages.
• Hand-deliver any outgoing mail containing checks or sensitive information directly to a USPS facility.
• Arrange for a mail hold when traveling.
• Consider security cameras or video doorbells to help monitor delivery areas.
• Report suspicious activity around mailboxes, mailrooms, and residential properties.
If you believe your mail or a package has been stolen, report the incident and be prepared to provide any available tracking information, delivery confirmations, photographs, or video footage. Residents should also notify the delivery carrier or postal service and contact the sender or retailer regarding missing shipments. Taking a few simple precautions can help reduce opportunities for mail and package theft. Residents are encouraged to stay vigilant, secure their deliveries, and report suspicious activity to police. Anyone with information about these incidents is encouraged to contact the Westport Police Department at (203) 341-6000.
